I have looked at a lot of red dots and I think that I want one of the aimpoint clones. I know there are so many out there and I want to get a good one and not wind up with a toy. I have seen the ones at 1337 tact, what else is out there? How are the NC Star aimpoint clones? Tacpoint? SPOT?

Any Aimpoint clone will be a toy. Out of the optics you mention the SPOT is your best choice.

How about a decent scope in the $100 range?

I’m not a magnified optics guy. I’ll leave that question to someone more knowledgeable.

+1

most any under $300 will be for range/airsoft use; skip the NcStar--its not even for the range...

what exactly are you looking for, a red dot or a magnified optic? if you want a magnified optic for under $100, then i'd look at simmons or something like that

if you want something of quality, up the money

Can you use a simmons 22 mag scope on a ar-15? I use the Simmons 22 mag on my Marlin 22 and its great, if it will fit my ar-15 I would love to use it. How would I go about mounting it? what would be the draw back using a scope like this?

This is the scope im referring to..

I had a 1337 tact Klonepoint on my 9mm carbine. It failed during a match.

I replaced it with a Russian PK-23 for about $150. The PK-23 isn't a toy. Optical quality isn't up to Aimpoint (I also have a ML3) standards, but it is tough and isn't going to fail anytime soon.

You can probably sell the AK mount (30mm) tat it comes with and make back a little money. BSW

The new Burris XTS line seems to be the best of the least expensive. They run about $250 w/HIGH ring.

Spend an extra $50.00 and get the SPOT. I have a few "cheap" optics setting in a box. One exception, and I do mean exception, was a Famous Maker I mounted on an AK. It still works and still holds zero, but I wouldn't chance another. With most cheap optics I end up spending more in ammunition and frustration trying to zero and re-zero. Ammunition isn't cheap these days. The SPOT had several test done with it on here. It passed.

Good cheap red dot?... http://www.bushnell.com/general/riflescopes_trophy.cfm?section=Hunting

the four reticle model can be had for under a hundred bucks...seems to work great on my Mossberg 835 shooting 3 1/2" turkey loads...so will definately hold up under extreme recoil...

I have had Simmons before and love them. I do have a flat top, but it is a 16'' and I want to keep it maneuverable, so I want to avoid having a huge scope on top. I like the smaller 22 mag scopes, but I don't that they will hold up.

Well, I bought a Aimpointreplica on Ebay from a HongKongseller. I don't need a real one, because I wasn't planning to go to war soon. Mainly I use a scope or iron sights at a 25m or a 100m range. I use the replica on the 25mrange on my .223 upper and my .22LR upper. Accuracy is dead on everytime. The finish on the replica is somewhat questionable and setting the scope is a bit hard too the first time because it's a bit flimsy. The replica has different dotintensitysettings and works on two small batteries which last long.

The mounts always suck, because they are probably made by a big toyfactory in China and they are not cut out precisely, but they will work and stay on your rifle.

But for the price? It works great for $25-$50, you get what you pay in finish and durability probably. You have to remember, it's just for fun. It's for toys and not for the real deal, so if you have to use it in an emergency, don't.

Here in the Netherlands it's absolutely illegal to use your firearm in case of emergencies. For instance: if someone breaks into your house. If you harm that burglar in anyway YOU will get punished for hitting him, let alone firing a gun at him. So if someone breaks into my house I have to leave and call the police, which will show up after 30 minutes. So I don't need an Aimpoint for emergencies and I don't like hunting either.

I am happy with my replica and I would buy one again if this one broke. But you get what you pay. Don't expect it to last forever and don't use it in emergency situations. A real aimpoint will probably be a better choice then.

I have one of the SPOT red dots. It is slightly higher in cost but for a budget red dot this really rocks. The mount is of high quality, holds zero well and seems of high quality over all. I have not abused it so I do not know how well it will hold up in that situation, but it has been dropped and used in rain and handled that very well. IMHO the SPOT is a best buy in the catagory if you can settle for a non combat tested optic. YMMV

I would suggest sticking with irons, and for close up shots using the large aperture.  If you get an optic, get a quality optic.

Edit:  You'll be sorry when you go to the range and your sight dies and you don't have any extra batteries. Most cheap red dots, like the Aimpoint clones sold on eBay, have a very, very short battery life.

I think that I will get good irons to start with and then get the SPOT, that way I have irons just in case

If you aren't concerned about looking "tactical", then check out the Ultradot sights. They have been around a long time, they are extremely rugged (SSK recommends them on their "hand cannons"--really hard recoiling handguns), they have a lifetime warranty, they're small and light and work really well. I have had one mounted on a shorty M16 for more than 15 years and it still works perfectly. They are a little above the cost you quoted (they run $125.-$135 depending on tube size.) The downside is that they don't have a large field of view like an Aimpoint or an Eotech, but if you aren't kicking in doors it won't matter.

Thought I would chime in here for my RDP mini redot the RDP-II.  Lot's of work went into this at $139.00.  They have been VERY well received thus far and several folks are running an ARMS #17DR on flat tops. Hope this helps.

If you're convinced you want an Aimpoint like clone then the Burris Speed Dot or Burris Xtreme Tactical Speed Dot will serve you well. They are higher in cost than the Hong Kong clones but way better in quality.

I've had the same experience as Shadowcop. Went through several cheap red dots (e.g BSA), but my "Famous Maker" just keeps on taking a beating and is about 4x brighter at the highest setting than any other cheap-o reds. I've used on 7.62x39 Saigas and 5.56 ARs.
Maybe we just got good ones; I don't know. Mine is about 5 -6 years old. Don't want to chance another.
Want to try another reflect style for "fun and  "up close and personal" social work

thank you!

I actually just received my accessories yesterday, and started taking those pics today.  I'm happy with what I ended up.  I'm just glad I didn't spend a fortune for plinking.
Seriously though.  Home defense, XD 40 loaded with Big bore brand rounds +P+ and a Sig Pro 9mm with corbon +P loads.  This AR is too big for home defense.
