I just finished my 1st AR build and I noticed that all the brass seem to be getting small dents near the top of the case right before it necks down.  There are brass scuff on the small knob (don't know the official name or purpose, sticks out about an inch) right behind the ejector port.  Is this normal?  I would think it would make the brass unable to be reloaded.  Thanks

Stand by because guys here love to jump on folks who get concerned about marks on the brass deflector.  That is the name of teh knob behind the ejection port.  It ws designed todeflect brass away from the shooter in the event that the rifle had to be fired left handed.

The brass is pretty amazing in how well it will restore in the resizing dies.  The dents usually have to be pretty bad to make the casings non-reusable.

That “small knob” is the brass deflector. It’ll get brass scuffs on it because it’s doing it’s job........... deflecting brass away from you and your rifle.

thanks.  i won't worry about it.  will a resizing dye hit push it out when it's down below the neck?

Depends on how bad, but for the most part yes, and other parts it will get it to the point that you can at least use the brass!  I usually load it all unless it looks awful to start with and then I cull them once they're loaded.  It is too time costly with a 1050 to stop and look at every single piece after it goes through a sizing die.  When doing the final inspection for head spacing and what not I decide then if it is too bad still!
