| Hello everyone. My name is John. This is a great forum. I've learned a lot. I have several hand guns, but recently, I've become interested in an AR15 style rifle. I had an M16 when I was in the Army nearly 40 years ago. Unfortunately, I live in California and, apparently, the only AR available for legal sale is the Bushmaster Carbon 15 (top loader with 5 round magazine). One of the gun shops showed me an alternative rifle called the KEL-TEC SU-16CA which fires .223 ammunition and uses a 10 round magazine. Can anyone tell me if this is a quality rifle and worth the price? Any other comments/recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you very much. |
| welcome john. I think they still make fab-10 lowers for CA residents too. It has a fixed 10 round magazine that is top loading as well. As for the kel-tec rifle,, you may not get a lot of feedback on it in this section. You may want to try the Arms & Tactics General firearm discussion forum if you don't get what you are looking for here. |

John, Welcome and you have more than a few options living here in CA. You can build an AR-15 using an OLL(Off List Lower). The way the law is written you can purchase one of these OLL's and build it up to almost any way you want. Here are a few rules you have to follow in CA. Must us a fixed 10 round Magazine. They sell a kit for around 30 bucks. Overall length must be longer than 30 inches. Barrel length must be 16 inches. Canot have a threaded muzzle, so you must have a permenant flash hider. The fixed magazine can be removed if you were to go out of state and wanted to use high capacity mags, but must be reattached before re-entering CA. You can have collapsible stocks, bayonet lugs, pistols grips etc etc etc as long as you have a fixed 10 round mag. There is alot more to this than what I am posting here but do some seaching and you will figure it out. |
| Thank you both for responding. rcr29: i will check with the Arms and Tactics forum. Thank you. badreligion: Thank you for your input about building my own. I am interested in that alternative. Since I'm relatively new to this forum, would you (or anyone reading this) mind pointing me to the most appropriate area (perhaps an archive post) to get more information (where best to purchase the correct parts) regarding home construction? Thank you. John |
