OK, what is the deal with the 6.8 mm, and is there any other 6mm AR's out there, and why do I need one or two???? |
No one else here has seen or heard of the 6.8mm AR's ??? Barrett has one out, Stag as well, hell is Colt going to put one out? 80% of the energy of a 308 sounds like a good deer gun to me but I just wonder if the ammo will dry up in a year.... Any feed back would be nice....

Short Story: based on 30-30 brass, but rimless, shortened to fit inside AR mag wells, and necked-down from .308 to .277. Shoots 110 or 115gr bullets to ~ 2,600fps. Uppers, brass, bullets widely available today. Good for paper, varmints, deer, hogs, 2-legged terrorists. Most often found in 16" or 18" barrel lengths in 1-10 or 1-11 twist. Our troops would be better-off switching to it and some Special Forces Groups already have apparently. Bushmaster and DPMS has a 6.8 ready to buy. RRA in next couple of months. +1 Variant Forum for more info... |
Don't you have an XCR? Robinson is going to release their 6.8 conversion soon. |

The deal is that 6.8 SPC is here to stay. I have been hunting with mine for over a year now. I am just about to build my second one. I have adopted the 6.8 as my "go to" AR caliber, and I now consider .223 to be nothing more than a plinking caliber. If the SHTF, yeah, it still would be better than a hammer, but the 6.8 does everything the .223 does with 50% more mass and energy. I like to hunt with my AR's and the .223 is....well....a mouse gun. You should get a 6.8. Just shooting it feels so much more....substantial. I don't see the ammo doing anything but proliferating as more and more ammo makers pick it up. Every major manufacturer makes a 6.8 SPC. Colt may not be focused on new calibers right now, because they really don't need anything to boost their sales. If the military presence in the Sandbox ever does wane, you can be absolutely sure that Colt will make one. I wouldn't doubt if they make one soon anyway. The "other" 6 mm's, released for the AR platform, are: 6 X 45 MM, a .223 necked up to 6mm. Interesting concept, but this one is all but dead. Not much advantage over .223. 6mm PPC....benchrest cartridge mostly 6.5 Grendel.....not the place to compare these, but consider it behind the 6.8 in terms of acceptance and development. .243 WSSM.... gladly, the "short, super short and super duper, mine is shorter than yours's" calibers are really turning into a miserable flop. We never needed them. A man can do everything that needs doin' with a gun, with a .45 ACP, .22 or .17 HMR, 6.8 SPC, and a .308. HTR out |
