Ok, I'm new to ARs and WAY new to optics. I've been checking out the pics of carbine and optic combos, soldiers in the field etc. I seem to see alot of ACOGs, a spattering of EOTechs and Aimpoints, and some others that I'm not savvy enough to recognise. I think understand the EOTech and the Aimpoint in both product line, and in some degree in technology and appropriate applications. Seems the EOTech is probable best in shorter reach (CQB) applications, and the Aimpoint perhaps mid to long (I understand that this is probably an overly simplistic at best, and wrong at worst understanding). Anyway, I'm trying to get my arms around what the ACOG application is, and what the best fit for me would be out of thier extensive lineup. Any description of the technology behind it, prefered applications, what sets it apart from the aforementioned sights, etc. I'm pretty blank on this, so any knowledge is probably new knowledge. My use would be 200 yards and under (more likely 100 yards and under) on a 14.5 M4 clone. I really apprciate the assist!!. BTW - I tried to search and it isn't working out too well for me today. I am assuming they are doing some work on the search engine. NOTE: I posted this over in optics, but there are alot of EOTech and Aimpoint discussions here, so I guess it is ok to throw this out here. This section gets much more traffic and has some great knowledge too. |

At the ranges you are shooting at, you want either an Aimpoint or an EOTech. Try both, buy the one that you are more comfortable with-- both are good. An ACOG is good for shooting distance. Its claim to fame is good clear glass in a shorter package than most fixed 4x scopes. The illuminated reticle is quite handy. Inside 100m it doesn't have much on the red dot sights, and inside 50m its a pain to use. FWIW, the ACOG is probably one of the toughest scopes ever built. |

What would you say is the ranges that the ACOG is most effective at? And does anybody understand what all the reticle options are all about? There has to be some sort of meaning to all those lines and symbols. I've heard some terms thrown about referring to them, but I don't understand. Is there a website or thread that explains the terminology and purpose of those? |
the 4x ACOG's are best from 0 - 300m but are used to even 600m + Go to the Trijicon website (banner top of this page) and read up on the BAC (Bindon Aiming Concept - click on Flash Demo) Check out the 4x models like the TA31 series. The TA01NSN was the first adopted by SOPMOD,nut I think the TA31A4RCO and M4RCO are the current choices. Great scope and multi-dimensional. In close, or out to 300+m, it is a winner. |
