Hey guys,

I have had guns since I was 12 years old. I've had everything from .22s to .380 rifles and many hand guns. I am looking to get my first AR how ever. I have read many of the threads on here. I am sorry how ever to make another one of these "what should I get posts". But I have narrowed it down to two different models. I would like to purchase a manufactured gun first. Then eventually build my own once I get familiar with the first. I am looking at getting either:

Colt M4 Carbine 6920 AR15 16
-OR-
Bushmaster M4A3

I hear bother are great guns. The Colt is going to be more expensive because of the name and Milspec. I would like opinions from you that know more about the guns than I do. Also are there any other models you would recommend? I am going to mainly be using this for target shooting and home protection. I would like a flat top as opposed to the handle railed. I will be putting on a light and sight of some kind (I'll figure it out after I get the rifle haha). Thanks for taking the time to read. Now I will get back to trolling the forums Ryan

Both of those will serve you well.
Of those two choices, I say go with the Bushmaster so that you'll have some money for ammo.

Do you have a local shop that sells AR's?  Check them out and see what they have.
LMT, Stag, & Rock River are good choices as well.

I'd get whichever one is cheaper of those two.

Since you're in Missouri, you could also support the "home team" and look at CMMG.  They have a great repuation, and I think they are easily as good as Colt/Bushmaster - but of course you have the downside of having to pay sales tax on everything, since it is in-state (as opposed to getting something shipped from out-of-state).

Yeah the Colts a little pricey. I'm thinking bushmaster. Still want to check out some Stags as well though.

The CMMG's look pretty smooth as well. Might go that route. Right now I'm just getting ideas and opinions really. Gonna make a spreadsheet and compare all the pros and cons haha

It's good to see a newbie that has taken the time to do some research before asking questions.

If you can swing it, I'd say go Colt.  They are coveted rifles and run like sewing machines.  The Bushmaster rifle is a good option too.  Just be aware that Bushmaster does not use F-Marked FSB's, meaning that you will have to buy a taller front sight post if you want to put an optic and a BUIS on your rifle.  Also, Bushie uses a commercial-spec buffer tube which is thicker than a milspec tube and will not accept all those cool 3rd party stocks.  So, if you plan to switch out the stock, you will need to purchase a milspec buffer tube with it and install that first (not hard to do, but it sucks having to replace something on your rifle with a part that should have come from the factory).  But, Bushmaster guns are excellent and run well.

CMMG has a lot of good things said about them on this board, but I have never handled any of their rifles.

You should run away fast and never look back before it's too late!

Seriously...check out the Equipment Exchange and keep the money in the 'hood.

But don't buy any ammo until we tell you it's safe.

I posted in another thread similar to this one not too long ago.

When I came to the same cross road as you and couldn't decide whether to go with Colt or Bushmaster, I decided to go with whichever one was easier for me to get. I called around and emailed everyone I could that might have had a 6920 in stock and I couldn't get one at a DECENT PRICE in under a months wait. Gander Mountain advertised a Bushmaster Patrolman's Rifle i(M4A3) in one of their ad's around the time I was banging my head on the wall, so I decided I would go check one out. After looking the gun over I left the store with it.

Since I work a lot and the weather has been fairly crappy in Indy (minus the week it was in the 70's & 80s) I had to wait around awhile to get out to the range. After my trip to the range on Friday, I am more that happy with my purchase. The gun is a great shooter and I had no problems with it right out of the box. (After the initial cleaning of course.)

If I had it to do all over again? Well lets just put this way, I am still going to buy a Colt. I also have a few custom builds in mind as well. (I am already addicted)

Bottom line... If you can afford the Colt, buy the Colt. OR If you can afford the Colt but cant see paying that much money for one, the Bushmaster will be a good buy too.

As for other OTC guns similar to the Colt 6920 and Bushmaster M4A3 there is also the Rock River Arms Entry Tactical.

There is a thread about the RRA VS Colt here: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=306112

Yes, I'm also AR dependent.  I really can't deal with this reasonably, it's KILLING ME!

I use to feel stupid for wanting multiple ARs until I found this website.

It doesn't matter. Just buy one. You will buy more after that. The search for the best AR is never ending. Buy one, shoot the heck out of it, replace the parts you think are not up to snuff. Buy another, do the same. And again. BRD, no cure.
