My rifle is relatively new, I bought it a few months ago from a DPMS at one of the gunshows in PHX.  It is just a basic 16".  What I want to know is if the bird cage that came on the barrel is removable or is it welded on with that pin I read about.  I don't know what years of ar-15's had that pin thing.

Should be threaded on.  Put a bit of masking tape on the flats to protect the finish and put a wrench on it.  You might need a little heat from a torch, I suspect DPMS uses loctite.

Without knowing what specific model you bought its hard to say, but if it is an A2 flash hider, it is unlikely that its pinned. I have never seen a 16" barrel have a flash hider that had locktite on it. I would find it very odd if a company did that. There is absolutely, positvely no valid reason I can think of to use locktite on a flash hider.

Thank you.  How difficult is it to get off?  I do not want to damage my rifle.  I've worked on performance cars for years but something like this makes me nervous.

Shouldn't be difficult at all. I can't imagine a 16" with a pinned FH. Does it have a washer behind it?

My Lite 16 had a thin lock nut behind the flash hider. Back off lock nut while holding FH. Comes off easily then.
