I am new to the AR scene but am very enthused.  BTW, this is my first post here.

Anyway, I purchased 2 AR-15's.   One from RRA and the other an LMT MRP.  I haven't been out to shoot them yet but I have a few questions.

First, should I "break in" the barrels?  that is, shoot a round, clean, shout a round clean and repeat 10-15 times?

Second, Both rifles came with compensators.  Can I replace the compensators with something else to improve accuracy?

Third, there seems to be small amount of slop between the LMT upper and lower but the RRA is tight.  I don't suppose that will affect accuracy in the LMT but is there anything I can do to take out the slop(it is small)?

I figure that the rifle that produces more accuracy I'll use as my varminter and the other will be used for fun...pouring lead through ;-)

Thanks,

JS

How will you know if you have improved your accuracy with a new muzzle attachment if you have not first shot the rifles as you bought them?

1-If they are chrome lined don't bother
2-I don't know, my guess is unless you are a very good shot the difference btw various muzzle devices will be impossible to tell except off a bench. You could try each with the compensator then without. Are you sure they are compensators and not flash suppressors?
3-Will not affect accuracy. There is a plastic doo dad you can stick in there to remove the "slop" but it is a waste of money. I cannot remember the name, one of the other guys can come up with a link.

Thanks for the replies.  You are right, that I may not need to improve accuracy until I know I need to, ie, shoot them first.  I've just read in a few places that compensators, flash hiders (versus a crowned muzzle) will open up my groups and while it's too cold and windy I could surf and look and learn on the net.
My rifles did come with the A1 flash hider btw.

Your rifles are more accurate than you are.
This holds true for probably 90% of the shooters in the world.

You can buy a lil rubber ACU WEDGE (I think that's the Colt name for this product?) from just about any company that deals with M4's or eBay, ranging in price from $2-$6 to take care of this issue.

Do the O-ring trick if it bothers you that much

I've read that installing the flash hider hand-tight (as opposed to torqued down) improves accuracy a tiny bit. I've never tested that theory myself, though.

Likewise, I'm not sure if the presence/absence of the flash hider has a noticeable effect on accuracy. But you can test for that on the range.

Have fun with your new rifles!

I'm in Helena.  Grew up in Fairfield but the wind here puts that place to shame this year.  Look forward to learning from you all
