After alot of talking and lookin....finally decided to purchase a AR. All this information is overwhelminghock.gif. Local gun store I like dealing with (along with a few others) has recommended a DPMS.
I'm simply looking for a tactical style model( shorter barrel), something with quad rails for the future toys and such, adjustable multi position butt stock, something flat top as to add red dot or the like, and a gas block of somekind as to use flip up sights instead of the standard iron sight getting in the line of view with optics.?  Any suggestions?? The catalog is kind of overwhelming and the more I read on the net and the catalog seems the more unsure I becomehelp       One more question....Whats the deal with the lightweight versions http://www.dpmsinc.com/firearms/5.56x45mm/lite_16.aspx     (Panther Lite 16)....at two pounds difference something got to be different, explain? Pros and cons of lightwieght versions? Thanks a million for any help out there for a new guy.hats

Welcome Bigtimber! Since you're in GA, you should really talk to JKiser. He is a local vendor, and member here. He sells Stag, and IMO they are much better quality than DPMS.

Thanks for the welcomehats) a few today and thought the DPMS looked like a quality product compared to several other brands. To me they all looked and appeared to be basicly alike as far as just looking around in the lowers and the overall finish and what not. Maybe I'm not seeing the whole picture? No offence meanthinking.gif

I don't dislike DPMS personally, I just think there are better quality ARs out there for the money. I think Stags are nicer, and @ $738 hard to beat. How much was the DPMS and what model was it?

Welcome.

I'd recommend Stag for your first AR.  You may think you need to get everything "right" on your first AR but you will be upgrading parts and buying more as you learn.

I find that the basics are simple. It's the enormous amount of options that can be confusing.

I just built my first AR and let me tell you it is way to easy to build your own to buy one. I know your thinking "maybe in the future... but for now I want one that works." TRUST me it is no harder then reassembling one after you clean it. If you plan on cleaning it you can build it.

Get a kit that has the upper all put together. 80% of the work is already done. They cost about $600 with all the extras. Get a lower from anyone with a FFL who likes you. I paid $90 for one and $150 for a complete lower. Don't get a complete it's so easy to put together there is no need.

So you can have a nice gun with everything you want for $690 or a basic model for $790. I'm in Georgia and would be happy to help in anyway.

P.S. post something in the hometown-georgia forum we'd like to welcome you to the discussion!

I have heard stick with ABC (Armalite, Bushmaster, Colt)...

and ABCR (Armalite, Bushmaster, Colt, RockRiver) in the past on these forums.

Fact is, there are many manufacturers of quality parts. You just need to research who makes a good what.

Personally, I have a Colt and a BM. No issues with either. I also have a buddy with a DPMS which he has never had a problem with nor have I when I shot it. I also have a ongoing build using RRA for some components. They all look HQ to me so far with no complaints.

Keep it inexpensive for your first one (within reason), the EBR bug will hit, and you'll be spending half your paycheck on ARs like the rest of us.

Good luck.

I wouldn't spend too much on the first rifle unless you know that this is something you are going to like to do. DPMS is a good rifle IMO. I really don't think that they are the top manufacture or anything, but a real good place to start. If you want a more expensive rifle later you can always sell it and upgrade. If this isn't the route you want to go then I would recommend Stag, LMT, Colt, Bushy, or RRA. All of these are great choices and they will go boom when you pull the trigger. Just go to a shop that has a lot of different models to handle and see which one you prefer.
