I am looking at a DPMS rifle to get as my first.  Looking on their site i fell in love with the Panther AP4 Carbine at first sight.  I like how their site lets you build and customize it and it said the base price for it is $899.  I noticed something else when i was looking at it, its says "LE/Military Only" (click the "build this rifle" link under the picture and its right there in the description).

http://www.dpmsinc.com/firearms/5.56x45mm/ap4_carbine.aspx <-- theres the link

If you look one below on the menu to the left you will see the "Panther AP4 w/ Miculek Comp".  If you compare the features of these side by side, the only difference is the empty weight (.25 lbs difference) and length.  When you click the build this rifle now link it dosent say anything about LE/Military only like on the AP4 Carbine.  This leads me to a few questions:

1. What is the difference between the two that would cause one to say LE/Military Only?  surely the length and empty weight wouldnt do this.
2. What is the "Miculek Comp" on the second?  Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but i am a n00b at this.
3. Is this rifle worth the money or should i get something else?

Sorry if any of these are stupid questions, i am a n00b at this.
Thanks, Lee

3. Is this rifle worth the money or should i get something else? The AP4 was my first AR...I'd get something else. You can find a similar model(M4gry) from just about every AR manufacturer. You can buy a lot more rifle for $900-plus, IMO.
ONE EXAMPLE....
-LMT complete M4 lower assembly/$330 @ ...Denny's or JTAC or Rainier Arms
-LMT complete 16"upper assembly/$572 @
...AR15 Barrels

Sorry if any of these are stupid questions, i am a n00b at this.

I got an AP4 with a flat top and removeable handle, mueller red dot, 3 30rd mags, tac force soft case, hard case, and a slign for $820 shipped.  You can get the rifle alone for like 700

Thanks for the response's.

splitbolt: Thanks for the info but im just curious why would would have rather got another one as your first.  Did you have problems with it or what?  And with the buying the upper and lower assembly, does it work better that way?  And is all i need to buy is both those parts and put them together and it works?

K1rodeoboater: Thats pretty much what im looking for with the removable handle, an aimpoint instead, hard case, and as many mags as i can get How
Thanks, Lee

DPMS rifles are good for the money, but there are better rifles for hard use.

Any quality upper will snap-on to any quality lower and work. Buying them separate allows you more options. I don't own a single AR that has an upper and lower from the same company. Probably never will.
