Went to the range for the 2nd time with my new (first) AR...a Bushy 16"A3 and have vastly improved over the first time which was rather dissapointing. Maby it was because it wasn't broken in yet, or I wasn't used to the AR type sights...but now after another 300 or so rounds and flip up front and rear BUIS's I have gotten my group down to around 7 inches... not the best I know, it is at 100 meters with irons....

All shots were sitting at the range benches without rests, rifle held off the table, elbows resting..

All groups high 3-4 inches, need to adjust front sight post, dont have the tool

Im using federal xm193 all the time....

It seems to be alot easyer to pick off burger king cups set up on the burm at 200 meters than it is to make a good group at 100 meters...anyone else experience this??

Is this a normal progression for someone pretty much brand new to the AR platform?

Im joining the marines here real soon and want to qualify expert....do I have a chance in hell??

Just for the record, I can shoot like a son of a bitch with traditional rifle/pistol sights and I shot Trap competitively when I was 11-14yrs old

Thanks for any input good or bad.

If you're shooting you have the tool.

Otherwise known as a cartridge tip.

Not teaching yourself.

Seriously you can learn bad habbits if you go practcing by yourself.  The USMC will teach you what you need to know.  Follow what they say, and do what they do and you have a shot of making expert.

I'll say one thing you can do is learn how to field strip your rifle.  Download the -10 (M16 Operator's Manual) from the [Information] button (above left) and follow it.

That is one thing that you can learn at home, that will be helpful when you get to Boot.

I'd also suggest learning the ranks now if you don't already know them.

I can already completely dissasemble/clean/and name every part of my rifle.... minus taking the barrel off.....

I went to a military boarding school(camden military academy) for a year so i very familiar with rank, drill, and overal military order.

So talking more on my group size...  is 7 inches THAT bad??..how much practice did it take everyone to achieve their current groups?? what are they??...all iron sights of course

You wont hurt my feelings

Thanks

Blindfolded in 30sec or less (then reassemble under the same conditions)?

I don't know what rank structure your acadamy used.  However the USMC enisted differs from say the US Army.

To score Expert in the US Army you need to shoot a MINIUM of the equivalent 6" groups consistantly (38 out of 40 times).  The USMC's is even tougher as they add in the longer range shooting component.

With proffessional instructors watching over my shoulder, not very long.

Okay, I'll gop ahead and say it.  7 inch groups are really not that good. If you were shooting 3 or 4 inch groups at 100 yards, that would be fairly average, I think. Some may disagree. Keep on practicing, and begin to use other shooting positions such as prone, kneeling, standing and sitting if you have a range that will allow that. Practice is the only way to get better. Sounds like you have the desire to get there, just keep on working on it.

There are some excellent shooters on this board that will provide you better tips than I can give you. I was an expert shooter, last time I qaualified, but there are some guys here who compete regularly and can help you out better than me.

Thanks for taking up the task of defending our country and for doing such an honorable deed.
