Is it safe to dry fire an AR?  Or will this cause damage to the receiver?  I have heard that it is bad to dry fire the receiver when the upper is not attached, but will it cause damage when both halfs are assembled.

Dry-firing will not hurt your rifle. It’s performed during training for proper trigger control and squeeze and should be done each time you perform a function check of your weapon.

Dry firing seems only to affect guns that have actual firing pin springs.

Dry firing most all centerfire weapons will be fine. Just do not repeatedly do it with a rimfire, the firing pin smacks the edge of the barrel and will wear itself or the barrel down over time or develope a lip.

...unless you are certain the rimfire in question has a positive firing pin stop, in which case you can dry fire until your finger goes numb.  All Ruger rimfires, for example, have firing pin stops.
