I am about to purchace my first AR, and i have been looking alot at the M&P 15's. I just have a few questions. Oh, i will be purchasing the M&P 15T. the tactical version with the 4-Sided, 10" Free-Float Modular Rail Forend (MRF). 1. Are these really a top of the line AR? Are there any out there that are better, not for the money or anything, but just flat out a better rifle? 2. I can get one for 1165 +tax. Is that a reasonable price? 3. Is there a scope i can mount on the top rail, and then take off when i want to use the sights, and replace while maintaining zero? 4. Is a seven pound trigger pull good? 5. here is a description from smiths website Model: M&P15 Caliber: 5.56 mm NATO / .223 Action: Gas Operated Semi Automatic Capacity: 30 Rounds, 5.56 mm or .223 Overall Length: 35" Extended / 32" Compacted Stock: 6-Position Telescopic Forend: 4-Sided, 10" Free-Float Modular Rail Forend (MRF) Sight Length: 15" Barrel Length: 16" Barrel Twist: 1 in 9" Weight (No Mag): 6.85 lbs. What does this AR NOT have that some others do? |
| I take it you mean the Smith & Wesson M&P series? I believe those are made for S&W by Stag Arms. You might want to price the Stag Arms verision of the M&P to see how much of a markup Smith is charging to roll the S&W on the rifle. If I were going to spend that kinda money on an AR, I think I would wait for the Sig 556. |
I do not believe they are "top of the line", but they are certainly above average, and the "extras" like the Troy folding sights are well respected here. YES, there are better out there, but as you said, "not for the money". If you want "the best", then keep reading around here and you'll find several VERY STRONG opinions. My only real opinion is of the forend that the S&W comes with. You can get a sturdier and lighter forend from LaRue or Daniel Defense in 10". While not cheaper, I personally prefer them. Since the barrel is not 14.5" with permanent brake, and since (I assume) you won't be attaching an M203 grenade launcher, the two-piece forend is (IMHO) not necessary and adds the extra weight as a result. |
| I recently added a M&P 15 to my AR collection. So far, I am very happy with it and I've read some good reviews on it. I read some discussions on here in the past that talked about S&W subcontracting different parts manufacturers to put together their rifle. I also read in the past where people looked up the cost of buying all of the parts that make up the S&W rifle and it would have been $300 more to built the exact rifle yourself. Bottom line, I am happy with my purchase. |
| $1165 for the T is a good price. I got the carry handle version for $830(I messed up and didn't get the Troy BUIS version fro $10 more and it cost me having to build another AR to get a BUIS to go with the EOTech I later purchased). You can probably get a "technically" better AR than the S&W but I haven't had any problems with mine. If I were knowingly going into combat I would have the gas key staked properly. Other than that I doubt you could tell the difference between it and a Colt. |

i was just at gander mtn and looked at the M&P 15A, it has the picitinny style rail on the top, no carry handle, flip up sight in the rear, fixed in the front. it is considerably cheaper than the T, and i dont think i would add any other accessories to mine besides a scope. i wouldnt add a laser or flashlight or anything, maybe the A would better suit me. whats the big advantage to a flip up front sight over the fixed front sight? will the front one be in the way when i mount the scope? why just have the back flip up not the front? |
If you don't want to hang a bunch of stuff off the handguard there is no advantage to the T. +1 on the 15A but don't get the carry handle model, you'll be pissed later. |
