I am a relative gun newbie. I currently own a Glock 21 and I love it. Now I am looking for one and only one survival/hunt/fun at the range AR. I am thinking either Armalite AR-10 or AR-15. My question is should I go with the built in iron sight or flat top? I know you could mount an ACOG but is that optimal on top of the carry handle? I don't want to make the wrong choice? I would like iron sights but would like to add a Trijicon TA01NSN or a Trijicon reflex as well. Any of your thoughts are appreciated from which AR, to the Acog, style, manufacturer, etc...

Thanks in advance

Go with the flat top.  Way more options.  You can run irons, and if you do go with optics you will have a lot more capability and none of the drawbacks of having one so far over bore with a fixed carry handle.
AR10 or AR15?  Kind of up to you.  You can get a better deal with the AR so you need to make that call on your own, based on what you want to do.  .308 ammo is not cheap, and surp is getting harder to find.  That might make a difference.

Thanks. Seems to be a huge disagreement about .223 vs .308 Alot of people are tough on .223 being a weak round? I read the information/guide on here making the case for the AR15 being the ultimate survival rifle. It made a compelling argument on many fronts. I have not been able to make up my mind completely yet.

No particulars, just best all around. I am only getting one rifle so it must be the most versatile for any situation.

Anybody ever use the back up iron site on the Trijicon TA01NSN Scope?

Yes I've used it...it's only good for CQB type of work...very short sight radius.

Well I went Armalite AR-15 16" Carbine Black Flattop. Now where to go from here? Any must have accessories? I will get iron sights and either trijicon acog or reflex. I have no knowledge about these except what I can gather from forums. Anyone have alot of experience with those type scopes/sights?

It's a great optic.  Quick, plenty of magnification within the 5.56 envelope, very durable.  The ACOG and Lupitas are my favorite glass.

Glock2145ACP,

I also purchase an Armalite M-15 A2 Carbine.  I find that an Eotech optic and TangoDown grip are nice accesseries!

AR-15 in 16" flat top.  Excellent choice as that's the most effective expansion platform and multi-purpose configuration there is in my opinion.

This sounds like a sarcastic statement, but the next most important add-ons are mags and ammo.  I've seen people on this forum buy an AR, pimp it all out, and end up with no budget to shoot it.  On one hand that seems like a really bad decision, but what it demonstrates is the difference between the gun builder/tweaker versus the person that wants to shoot and become proficient and skilled in the Jeff Cooper sense.  I'm not saying one is better than the other, but based on your original criteria, my advice would be to start shooting that thing and then buy only what you need to shoot it better.

That's my opinion.

Great post! Makes sense to me. But what do I NEED? I have no plans of going overboard just essentials for combat/range. Obviously with the flattop I have no sight at all so do I want iron sight and acof or reflex or just one or the other?

i've seen guys like that too. there's one guy that showed up at my local range wearing every manner of tactical crap, his rifle had more crap hanging on it than you could believe and he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from inside.
