Hope this is not a tabu subject and that this forum is the correct location to ask my question? Father of a new (still in fld training but about to go solo) police officer. Someday he may be authorized to carry a backup long gun. Do most Departments issue or can officers by/build their own? I am looking at cost now vs cost later. If he was to buy / build for LE use, does anyone have suggestions. Is the AR15 common to most departments or would he be better advised to go with a shotgun or something in 7.62/308?

I can't answer all your questions and am not a police officer. I do know some  police officers and as far as the acceptable caliber goes it depends on the department. Some where I live only allow a .223 being in the city and some further out will allow a .308.

I'm a city LEO, and I can tell you that different departments have different regulations regarding what can and can not be used for duty.  Just because AR15s are allowed, doesn't mean that all of them are allowed.  Most departments have set policies regarding which models and brands can be used.

Without knowing what type of department he is working for, it would be a hard call to make anyway.

ETA-  The basic 16" M4 style carbine is an all around good patrol carbine.
