hey everyone, 1st off, thanks to everyone for all the great info and help on here! anyways, im going to order my new varmit AR tomarrow. a DPMS 20" bull barrel, with free float vented rail, cyro barrel w/ blk teflon finish, barrel threading for a "bennie Cooley Compensator", ACE stock, flat top receiver and im also having a JARD trigger installed. im excited to say the least!

My question is, is it worth putting the compensator on the thick bull barrel? or will it look stupid on it since the barrel is of a larger OD, im hoping to help eliminate a little bit of muzzle jump and also hoping the end of the barrel will match up with the end of the compensator and be flush. anyone have experience here?

Second Question, i have my optics narrowed down to 2..   US Optics ST-10 with the M.O.A  scale 1 retical with a fixed power of 10x and the Nightforce 3.5-15x50 NXS with the NP1-RR varmit retical (love this!)  my only deturrent with the nightforce is cost.  whats everyones recomendations on these 2 scopes, as well as a good mount?

Last question......where's the cheapest place online to buy either one of the two scopes above

Well sounds like you have a nice rig going there. The brake will help with muzzle jump even on a very heavy rifle. You should call DPMS to find out if it is flush with the barrel. As far as scopes go you should really take a look at Leupold, I have a number of them and they are very nice, a Vari X II 6x18 with the reticle of your choice is a very good scope, get the target knobs. I have been buying my scopes from Bearbasin.com for at least 10 years now and their service/prices are great. Shoot us some pics when it is done !!

Here is what mine looks like:

I had to send it to JPRifles and they made it so it is flush.  If your barrel is .750 in thickness, then you can just order the brake and install it yourself, but if the barrel is thicker, then you will have to send it to them.  You may want to check out the 20" LILJA "SUPER SAM" from Wes.
It is the 6th post down on this thread.

As far as scopes, I went with the IOR 2.5x10-42 illuminated FFP with metric knobs and thre Larue SPR Mount.  If I had to choose between the two, it is hard to choose because one is fixed and the other is variable.  I'd save up and get the SN-3.

That's why I went with the IOR scope.  It only costs $800.00 and it has everything on it that I could ever want, FFP and illumination and I made my own BDC for the turrets.

I too have the DPMS 20" stainless bull barrel but in the fluted variety (it was the only one thay had at the time.)  You won't be disappointed.  Mine is 1/9 twist with the .223 chamber.  It eats 55gr bulk bullets like no tomorrow.  I don't have any complaints about recoil without a brake.  I shoot max loads with Varget and H335 because that's where I get the tightest groups.
