I ordered my new RRA NM A4 on December 8, 2006.  Got the phone call from my dealer on January 26, 2007 that the rifle had come in.....  My wife and I made the two hour trip to the dealer on the 27th.

Inspecting the gun I noticed:

The box was marked:
 RRA NM A4 with a 1/2 x 1/2 min 0.40 hooded aperture.
The box contained:
 RRA NM A2 with a 1/4 x 1/4 min 0.30 hooded aperture.
I ordered:
 RRA NM A4 with a 1/4 x 1/4 min 0.30 hooded aperture.
So they shipped me an A2 rathern than an A4.....

I mated the upper and lower but the rear of the bolt hit the recoil spring retainer post.  The "groove" in the bolt was not at the 6 o'clock position and did not line up with the retainer post.  How can this happen?  Isn't the bolt "faced"?

I came home and looked at my friends two AR's.  His Colt has an open gap on the bottom surface of the bold an can only be inserted one way.  His Bushmaster has a groove that could not be inserted at anything but the 6 o'clock position because of the shape of the bold and its housing.

I didn't pull the bold out of the upper because that's when I noticed that it was an A2 rather than an A4.

Needless to say, I rejected the rifle but...  does anyone know how the bold fits in the upper of an RRA AR?  How can the bolt be rotated in the upper?

something not right here.

did you mate the upper and lower of the new rifle, or to one of your friends uppers/lowers?

The NM A2 is a very impressive rifle, but it is designed for either competition shooting or serious paper-punching enthusiasts

some photos would help.

Too bad the shop is 2 hours away, because it sounds like you are headed back.

By the way.....Welcome aboard, mswestfall  and .........not to worry. Once you get this sorted out it will be all smiles.

It occurred to me that the only difference in the rifle you ordered and what you go is the carry handle configuration

the A2 is a fixed CH, and the A4 is a removable. The bolt is the same in both

have you figured out the problem yet, or is it still inoperative? Maybe a safety thing or packaging measure on RRA's part.

The groove in the caarier should line up with the pin in the 6 oclock posistion. If its not its either machined wrong or turing side to side and that could only happen if there was no key on the carrier or tha carrieres rails are mis machined as well....take it out and see,if the key is on right and what the whole unit looks like.

redfisher & ChromeLined

Thanks for the comments.  I joined last month and have used AR15.com to help select this rifle.  I hate to have my first post be a complaint but I really walked out of the store yesterday scratching my head.

ChromeLined, I agree with what you said that the key should line the bolt up in the chamber housing.

redfisher I was beginning to look at the idea that RRA might ship it in a "locked" mode but when I saw that this was the wrong gun I just put it back in the case.  Then I got home and kicked myself for not figuring out what was wrong.  Now I may never know.
