Turn it half way between fire and safe. Use a punch on the opposite flat side to drive out the saftey. Replace with what you want.

OR, remove the pistol grip, spring and detent and pull the selector out. I prefer this method since I am not limited on time and it causes less wear on the parts.

You forgot to mention that he should loosen the grip screw to at least halfway out before he starts punching anything. Also, that the hammer should be in the cocked position

 Absolutely not.  If you're using a hammer to install or remove a selector then you're doing it wrong.

Remove the pistol grip to release the spring tension from the detent and the selector will slide right out.  Depending on tolerances you may also need to remove the hammer.

Never an issue.

Works great on a M16 style selector. Never got it to work on a AR15 selector because of the way the detent pocket is made. Really easy to take the grip off so no reason for me to risk beating on it to remove a selector.
