I recently decided to look into getting a rifle.  I was wondering if you lefties could tell me if it is worth it to go ahead and build a left handed AR or if a standard AR would be perfectly fine.  I am on a semi-low budget and am brand new to the firearm.  Thanks.

<-- not a southpaw

However, I have seen many a left hander shoot the M16 with few issues.

Having said that, since they are now available, go with a lefty. We are in the process of getting them authorized for our department so it's easier on the southpaws.

I'm left handed and shoot a "standard" rifle w/ no problem. Infact I find a left handed position awkward, but I'm right eye dominate so I'm sure that makes some difference too.

If you do get a lefty AR, you may enjoy it a little more, but I think the negitives may outweigh the positives; at least they did for me.

First, it is more expensive.  You have already stated that budget was a concern.. Next, there are some parts (bolt, carrier , and maybe others) that aren't interchangeable with "standard" AR's.

Lastly, and I think most importantly, you will only be used to YOUR gun.  If you're shooting with your buddies, their rifles will be different than yours...

YMMV, but that's why I went with a "standard" instead of a lefty

I'm left handed and have a Lefty Stag upper.

I bought it with the full auto bolt carrier since I have a DIAS also.  I also have 3 other AR's and they are right handed.

I've been shooting right handed guns all my life, so the AR's are easy to adjust to.  That being said, I really like the lefty upper and have put a 11.5" barrel on it with a 3 prong flash hider.  It makes a tidy little package!!  I also added a Bushmaster ambidextrous full auto selector.

Fortunately, the barrels are the same for left and right uppers and bolts/bolt carriers.

Thanks for the replies.  Right now I am looking at around 600 for a standard and 850 for a lefty.  Im not sure if I sould use the extra 250 on accessories and ammo or just bite the bullet and buy the lefty one.  Please help.  Thanks.

I'd go with the standard AR.   I'm left eye dominant and have been shooting rifles for 35yrs and have no problems whatsoever.   I shot the M-16 during my 20yr military career left handed with out any issues.

I am wrong handed as well. I debated for a long time about getting a left handed upper.  However, after much consideration, I decided to stick with a right handed upper and add some ambi accessories (selector, ambi-catch).  The brass deflector has always served its purpose in my experiences.  I have never had an issue with brass hitting me in the face.  Also, having the the ejection port on the right side of the weapon, makes it easier to observe a malfunction for a left handed shooter.  I say stick with with a standard upper and get an ambi selector and Norgon Ambi Catch.  Thats just my opinion though.  Your decision should be based on you personal preference.
