looking at Colt 6520 and Colt 6920.  Difference I am having most trouble with is the carry handle being fixed or detachable. The carbine would not be used for long range.  Any suggestions and/or opinions?

My humble opinion is go with the DCH.
You will likely never regret having more options available to you.

Agree with Ghost Ring.  The detach carry handle doesn't give up anything in accuracy, and you can yank it and open your gun up to a whole other world of optic options.  Its incredibly flexible.

Get the flat top if you are going to run optics.
If not go with the A2, or even the A1.

Get the flattop...right now you may think that you will never use optics but trust me...sooner or later you'll be looking at Aimpoints, Eotechs, or even worse...low power variable optics.

You could also get a LE6721

It is just like the LE6920 just different barrel profile and a few other things.

I take it you do want a rifle with collapsible stock and 16 inch barrel?
