I have been tinkering around with the idea of getting a CQB setup with a 14.5" bbl with a permanent FS, and finally decided to get on the ball and commit to an SBR. That being said, I have quite a few questions about How to configure my upper (which I will order from CMMG). These are:

1) Barrel length I have read that uppers with 11.5" barrels tend to be more reliable than 10.3" versions. Is there any truth to this? What length should I go with? I should also say that I plan on using a Noveske FH.

2) FF Forearm I have been looking hard at the Samson CAR forearm with the extended lower rail for this build, bit in looking at the pictures of SBR builds on the forum noticed that not many use Samson. Is there a reason for this? Just personal preference?

If anyone has any other additional tips for building an SBR that would also be appreciated.

A 10.5 or 10.3 upper built by a competent builder using good parts will function just fine.

CMMG is a competent AR smith/builder, and they will stand behind their product. Buy with confidence.

As far a using a Samson FF forend, most folks have a personal preference on what they put on the ARs. The Samson is a good product and one of the easiest to install.

Here is a pic of my 10.5 LMT with a Troy 10" FF forearm. The Troy and the Samson are virtually identical in looks and installation.

Hope this helps.

Please excuse my hopefully minor hijack of this question--can you detail the manufactuer and model for the parts that you installed?

Such as for the flip up front sight, the gas block, the stock, optics, and flash hider.

Because of the barrel length, your's is a NFA?  It would take a 5" extension to be non-NFA?

Because of the barrel length, your's is a NFA? Yep, registered SBR It would take a 5" extension to be non-NFA? Yes, but why would you do that. If you want a 16" gun get a 16" barrel, if you want a 10.5" gun get a 10.5" barrel.(Although, with the KX3 it does add 2 3/4" to the length but your ears will appreciate it.)

Larue cantilever mount Yep
KX3 flash hider noveske  Yep

My answers in red.

Thanks for the info.

Actually, I don't want a 10.5" bbl, I'm just a newb trying to learn all I can, so I was trying to confirm my understanding, which you guys did.  Thanks again.
