What is lighter, a conventional A1 receiver (like CMMG sells) or a flatop without FA (like the Les Baer) with a BUIS installed?

I obviously realize the weights will differ between the different styles of the BUIS, I am thinking generally...i.e. Larue, ARMS, TROY, etc.

The reason I ask is because I currently have a 16" LW than I put in an A1 receiver (w/FA) and am curious if the flatop BUIS combo would drop some weight off.

The LesBaer with any of the sights you mentioned would be lighter.  The BUIS would have to be over 4oz just to equal the weight (so LMT and similar sights are out).  The Troy is one of the lighter BUISes (lighter than the #40) but is also a very strong BUIS.  LaRue weighs a bit more but is stronger still.

Thanks Forest, I figured you would be the one to know.  Are you saying the sights would have to be over 4oz to equal the A1?  I don't think I am following you...I had a long day today.

Exactly.

So to say it another way, the BUIS would have to be under 4oz to be lighter?

This is with a FA-less upper?  If so, then how much weight is being saved, 1 ounce or so???  While being at the disadvantage of lacking the FA?

Yes (the number is 4.something - around 4.1 or 4.2 IIRC)

Yes

Weight saved depends on the BUIS selected.  Assume you are using the Troy (1.8oz) sight - the LesBaer + Troy would be about 2.3 to 2.4 oz lighter than the A1 upper.

IM me tomorrow and I can get you exact figures.

Thanks Forest, I guess I will stick with the A! then...2oz does not really seem worth losing the FA to me.
