Federal AE223 and Federal XM193 besides one is .223 and the other is 5.56??? edit: i should make more clear why i want to know. i want to use xm193 as home defense ammo. but i dont think i can afford to keep it bc i paid 320/1000 and that put a financial dent in me. so i was wondering if the american eagle can be a better alternative for HD. i also have some Remmington UMC .223 at home. whats the difference between the remmington UMC and the AE223? would u guys feel comfortable using the UMC for home defense? and if the UMC is the same as the AE then there may be no need to buy AE. right now im trying to get rid of the xm193 as i cannot afford 320/k bc i am broke. |

About 150fps from the same barrel. Note the published MV for the AE223 load is taken with a 24" test barrel, while the XM193 is taken from a 20" AR-15. In the same barrel you'll notice a velocity difference. Oh yeah the XM193 will also have a staked in primer and better brass. |
| What is it that I don't understand about using a .223 ar as "home defense"? If I live in the city, and someone lives withing 50yds of my house, and I shoot an intruder where the bullet does not stop in the intruder, the bullet can go through an outside wall and injure an innocent. |
What's your plan, because after reading this you might just change it. www.theboxotruth.com |
The understanding is that the 223 is a fragmentation bullet. Most often it wont exit the intruder. If it does it wont have much energy left to go through an exterior wall. If you're that worried about your neighbors, use a club. I, for one, will not worry about the neighbors if and when that time comes. My only concern will be for my family's safety. |
You have the same view much of LE community had until the FBI's testing showed that .223 is a superior round over handgun calibers, and it's less lethal after it passes barriers than handgun calibers too. Which is why they aren't ordering anymore MP5/10's and they are going to the LAR-15's. |

No flame intended but it looks like you really need to read the Ammo Oracle. A few of your recent threads: www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=16&t=298377 www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=16&t=297912 www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=16&t=297869 www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=16&t=296778 www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=16&t=294414 www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=16&t=293842 www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=16&t=293349 www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=16&t=290931 etc... |
Concur... That and, don't go cheap on HD ammo. Practice with the cheap stuff but if the time ever comes, send the very best that money can buy. You won't have to practice with 5000 thousand freakin' rounds of Hornady TAP. Just buy a couple of mags worth and be happy with yourself... |
obviously i have not found the answer im lookin for in the posts nor the ammo oracle. i feel that im supposed to have the mind set of knowing it all. i dont understand why it is frowned upon to want help and to become more informed and educated about the ar. please if there is some way to know the answer to every question about the ar, point me in the right direction. i feel as if i am not welcome here and should be expected to know it all... |
| You're not going to need more than 1000 rounds of HD ammo anyway, so I wouldn't worry about the XM193 being expensive. AE223 is great practice ammo, just hold on to that XM193 and buy AE223 from here on out. Shoot a little XM193 just so you know if there's a difference in feel. |
don't take it personally ...if all of the people on here that were tossing around what ammo to buy asked in a new thread, this site wouldn't have the bandwidth to support it...the info is there, the posts have been made, it is up to you to dedicate time into researching it for yourself...trust me it will be much more rewarding |
