after changing out the grip on my ar i noticed that i could pull the complete safety assembly out of the reciever, I am assuming that this has to do with the small spring that fits in the upper part of the grip that contacts the safety sear itself, but how do i go about fixing this?

there should be a small spring and a detent pin in that hole. The pin is pushed up into the bottom of the safety by the spring to hold it in and 'lock' in the different positions. ie safe, semi
If you lost the pin you will need to buy another.
They are inserted into the lower b4 you install the grip there should also be a matching hole in the grip I usually put the spring in this hole when installing.

Yep, looks like you lost the detent pin that both keeps the selector level in and also gives it the necessary stops.

You could shoot the rifle without the safety, however I wouldn't recomend it.

You can order one from midwayusa.com here is a link to the part, they also offer a clickable schematic if your having problems.
