Does the gas key direct gas to the back of the bolt head where its gas rings are located?"  I really never understood the if the hole in the gas key leads somewhere.

Yes, to the area behind the rings, where the bolt tapers down.  That's why so much fouling occurs there.  The gas expands there and because the bolt can't move forward, the carrier must move rearward.  Run a pipe cleaner down the key and you will see exactly where it comes out.

yep. the area between the gas rings and the back of the bolt carrier create a vessel that is pressurized by the incoming gasses.
