Is there a benefit of having the gas port further up the barrel than the m4 style guns? Other than the front and rear sight being farther apart. I am in the market for my first AR and I want a 16" bbl.

Take this w/ a grain of salt...this noob has just enough So here goes...
I went w/ a mid length because I was finding out that the middies are potentially more reliable and IMHO, they look more in proportion vs. the shorty

Smoother cycling, softer recoil, less wear and tear, and just more enjoyable to shoot.

Yes, I have owned both. I find that CAR length guns to recoil in a faster, sharper manner.

Mid-length: lower gas pressure from longer gas system.  Supposedly more reliable because of the lower gas pressures (less wear).  Less felt recoil (same reason - lower pressures).  Longer sight radius than a CAR setup.  More handguard real estate for big hands.

Carbine-length: Works great for me.  Practically NO recoil felt.  My big hands fit it fine.  I don't plan to shoot it 12,000+ rounds to wear it out.  Looks okay to me, and the shorter sight radius is still enough to yield great accuracy and ease of target acquisition.

Summary: Get what you want.  Don't buy the "middies are better than anything" hype.  My CAR setup is smooth as can be, even with a plain old CAR buffer.  Shop around and see what other features you want, and don't be limited by the middy paradigm.  You may like that M4 barreled, government-profiled upper WAY more than that heavy middy RRA HBAR because of less weight, same length (or shorter, if you get a 14.5 w/pinned FH), and more coolness (the "look at my cool M4gery") factor.

I'm sure mid-lengths are great, or no one would take the time to produce them.  However, I'm not sure they're needed, as my CAR works great too with no issues.

Note: I have never fired a mid-length system.  Hopefully, someone who has fired both middies and CARs will come along and give a comparison based on actual experience.

I had an M-4gery.
I now have a middy.
I don't plan on getting another carbine length gas system unless its a 10.5 inch barrel.

Softer recoil impulse (yea, I know its a .223, but bear with me) longer sight radius, and more real estate for my hands were what sold me on a middy.  What I didn't count on was the way it felt so much more balanced than the M-4gery.  Set up with a Noveske origional profile (Think a bit less than HBAR) and a DD 9.0 out front, it just points and handles better than the M-4gery ever did.  And I can get back on target faster cause the muzzle just doesn't move cause of the extra mass up front.

Try one of each.  Cause eventually you'll end up getting both.  Thats the ARFCOM way. . . .
