Anyone? You thoughts?  Almost had one come home with me Saturday.  Are they worth it? They had $1599 on the tag, but it had been there a while and they were looking to make a deal.  Any idea on what a "good" price would be?

Sure did look nice, felt great on the shoulder......

The really bad part was I had the money to buy it right then, but decided against it at the last minute cause of the price.

$1600 for a DPMS?

why not trick out a RRA, LMT or Bushy for that price

It's a pretty sweet looking gun.  I'd spend the money.  But then again I'm in Kalifornia.

Really nice looking rifle. What turns me off is the 16 lbs weight. But if you was only going to use bench shooting then weight would not be a problem. Also hard to tell by the picture but can a scope be mounted to it.
I think for $1600 you could build a long barreled AR that would be just as accurate of not more so...plus weigh less.

Its a rifle with a very specific purpose.  I have several DPMS's and like their stuff, but I will probably never own one, because I will probably never do that kind of high power shooting.

It's a lot of rifle for the money, a well used "space gun" will often run as much, or more than the asking for the DPMS race rifle.

If you're into shooting NRA type high power matches, yes, it's a good deal for a turn key rifle.  Definately a specialty item, with a narrow customer base.

Compass Lake Spacegun: Custom built by Frank White. ...better craftsmanship, better barrel...better service.
DPMS is fine...Franks' stuff is much better...IMHO if you're really going to be competing and not just playing with it.

OK, about 50-50 from the band. That's about what I'd expected.  I'd hoped for an actual "owner report", but I might have asked the wrong crowd.

The AR that I built (Dalphon lower, DPMS 20" SS bull upper and laminated JP stock +many other items inside) weighs in at just over 11lbs so weight is not an issue. My Mauser .308 weighs in at just a tad over 14lbs.  Bench guns are supposed to weigh more.

Price isn't really an issue, as the cash comes easily right now. But compared to what I see out there for an accurized AR (yes, I looked at the CLE, and looks and price I wasn't impressed.  Sorry).  The AR that I put together was $1000 in just parts, not including time and adjustments. It's a lot more accurate than I am, but I'm getting there. And, with the exception of the stock I put on it, it looks just like every other one out there.  I don't like my toys looking like a white panel van in rush hour.

I run bench guns now. Haven't run through the woods or across the sand with a rifle since 1991; I really don't see the need since my current targets aren't shooting back. Plus, I've got other toys for CQC and long range attitude adjustment should the specific purpose activity require it.

This is a range queen, the Race Gun.  Weight is not an issue. quite the inverse actually.  Price isn't an issue, performance and to a degree, looks, are.  Running through the woods capability isn't an issue.  Being a ready to run, complete, specific purpose, specific and unique design with customer support is.  The only competition I do is against myself. He's the only guy I need to get better than.

Looks like I'll be making another run back to PA in a week or so to get it.    thanks

For just a couple of hundred more you can have a JP-15.  Now THAT'S a rifle!!!!

does it come with sights?  the ironstone buttstock alone is about $250.  are you going to use it as a bench gun or shoot highpower with it?  if your serious about shooting highpower put one together with better components, or look at one from a serious maker.  the woa front sight base is way better(repeatable) than the jp.www.whiteoakarmament.com/

heres my dpms .308

All those choices are nice, but......THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME.

Put the DPMS Race gun and all of the other choices I've been shown on a bench, and SEE which one sticks out.

Not only do I want something that is a possible tack driver, I want it to look different than the other 12 bench toys on the line.  To a lesser extent it's the looks over performance, but the more I see the "other choices" (which all look the same to me) and I can get the same performance in a different looking package, I'm stuck on looks.  They're all accurized piles of parts put together and they'll all outshoot 99% of the folks that will handle them. The DPMS upper I'm shooting now does very well. Can't expect another one to do any different. Experience with DPMS is good so far.

BUT...., and this is where I'm coming from now that I think of it, BUT...I've never been the one who gets something that looks much like the one everyone else has.  The others just look like AR's: black, basic, and truthfully, comparitively speaking, boring.  They may all work great, but they look boring. Great if that's what you're looking for.  The more I ponder it, the more I don't want basic black.

OK, phone call just made, it's mine for $1299 if I want it.  Pick it up the next time I go back home.  JARGIMS (Just Another Race Gun In My Safe)

Thanks

The good thing about DPMS is if it's a miss, they'll shoot again until they hit it right enough to make you happy. DPMS, Dodge, Coke.... all that it is to some people is brand loyalty or brand bashing. You're the only person that has to be happy and it sounded like you had made your choice before you posted your thread.

I hope it works well for you, friend.

that is a pretty good deal.  they say that fftube is heavier too.  i think its a 1/8 barrel.  as far as standing out, it will attract attention from the masses, but will get you no respect from those in the know.

Guess so.  I'd hoped for an actual owner to step up, but the ratio of actual owners compared to the Monday Morning type seems a bit lopsided.  Guess I'm fixing to change that.

When it comes to something that might shoot as well as the others, the only criteria left is looks. Price is as well, but you can't build a "one of a kind" style gun for that price.

Considering I can pick it up for $200+ off of the best price I've found, the apparent rarity of it (no one here has one or I'd have at least 1 reply as such) and the reported accuracy (all manu's report accuracy) of the gun, I'd have to choose based on the "worth" to me.  You can't make one for that price, so it's worth it to me.

(go ahead and highlight the "might shoot as well", I know someone wants to do it)

I'll let you know how it shoots.

itll shoot as good as a 1/8 standard ss 24" wilson bull barrel with a .223 chamber, if you feed it good handloaded ammo.

eta, quality factory match ammo will be decent.
