Not sure how or what is going on here.  I take my (cleaned regulary) weapon out to the range, and it will cycle fine till about half way through the first mag.  That is when the problems start.  First off it will eject the spent casing, then it will strip the next round out of the mag-  BUT the bolt will stop half way closed leaving the newly stripped round loosely in the chamber.  It will do this for abit, then shoot good for afew more rounds, then start up again.  I have cleaned, tightened the key, got a new key & re-installed it (& staked it).  I have even swapped out bolt carriers...  Still, same thing.

This may sound funny, but after I shoot afew mags through it & it gets dirty it works fine?????  It happens with G.I. ammo, Wolf ammo & Winchester. I use all U.S.G.I. mags (no "pro-mag crap")  It happend with my "Bushie" Bolt carrier, & my friends "Colt" bolt carrier.

Do any of you have a solution?  Mine right now is to throw it in the dumpster!

I like my AR, but I don't want to have my AR qoute the same as my Jeep Wrangler qoute:                          "I always wanted one, till I owned one."

Help keep this weapon away from the garbage can...

Try toying around with a different / heavier buffer ...

Interesting.  Since you are ejecting the previous round... and then hanging up stripping the new round, I would not suspect a short stroke.

If it was hanging up stripping rounds... I'd suspect the mags are too new and have sharp feedlips.  Or the recoil spring in the buffer tube is bad/worn.  However - you said the round was loose?  This is almost like it is stripping the round, getting past the feedlips, and then stopping.  The only thing I can think of that could cause that is the hammer is following the bolt home, and hanging it up in the cutout designed for this on the firing pin.

The key here, is when it happens - take a lot of time inspecting it to see what is hanging it up.  Can you push the bolt forward, or do you have to fully pull the charging handle all the way to the rear to resolve the hang?

Amen!!  It completely strips the next round out of the mag & then hangs up... The hammer does not appear to be catching (following).  This carrier & lower are all from the origional "bushie" rifle.  After swapping the upper, it worked great for awhile, but then...

The mags are all old, like 6-7+ years, if not older.  Some of them are old G.I. mags that I picked up off the range after units had there "laser-tag" (M.I.L.E.S.) wars & they were left behind or lost...

If it hangs right here:

I would suspect hammer follow... but you should be able to determine that, because by rocking the charging handle back just slightly... it would hang repeatedly here until you pulled it back far enough.  The fact it did it on a couple uppers, and different carriers, reinforces this theory.

If you had an enhanced carrier without the cut-out... that might prove it..... beause if you get hammer follow on that, it will chamber and lock, just no click when you pull the trigger.

If it is indeed hammer follow - replace your trigger group.  It will either be the disconnector, the trigger, or the hammer... depending on when it is failing.  In your case... if you want to be cheap or only replace the offending part.... replace only the disconnector... as yours is failing to hold the hammer back during weapon cycling.

First, make sure it is installed correctly, and there is no major debris in there.  Ensure the disconnector spring is installed and in good shape.
