how do you store your magazines in mil spec bags, in your safe in ammo cans what is the best way
8/22/2006 7:05:55 PM EDT
[#1]
loaded in my safe

3 - 4 range mags stay unloaded because I'm never real sure which rifle will get the nod on any given range day and I shoot different ammo in diferent rifles.  If mags aren't loaded you are never allowed to mention "SHTF"

I don't know what the best way is but I store 12 of mine is a shoulder mag bag that holds 12 30rd mags and I store 8 30rd mags in my MOLLE vest, all loaded just in case SHTF.  My other mags are just laying around.

Holds 24 30rd mags almost perfectly.

Just wish it was about 1" shorter.

It's from ACE Case.com and is called the Six Pack #99, it comes in black and OD and goes for $16.  It is made really well.  I have had mine for a few months and it is holding up great plus I received very good service from the company

Here is my configuration in a "Fat 50" or SAW can.

But i'm switch it over to the fuze box, since it's lighter when loaded.

Opey, where are you spoons at?

Holy crap!  I'm going down to the garage to cut up some carboard USPS Priority Mail boxes right now.  I hate having my mags rattle around in my ammo can when I'm driving around going to the range.  Cardboard is ingenius!

The sad thing... I'm serious.  I really am going to cut up boxes to use in my AR mag ammo can.

ETA: I just finished custom-fitting the carboard pieces to my 50-cal ammo can (not a fat 50), and I can fit 14 mags in there tightly (no rattle) in the back 3/4 of the can on their sides in 2 stacks of 7 with a cardboard all around the inside and on the bottom of the can and a piece of cardboard in front of them to hold them tightly.  That leaves me enough room in the front 1/4 section to lean one more mag in with a ziploc bag of my loose ammo to pack it tightly.  Luckily, I only have 15 mags right now.  I have a line on about 12 other used 30-rounders, so I guess I'll need to fit the next .50 for more cardboard.    Thanks for the neat tip!  It wasn't that obvious to some of us.  There's always a low end on the learning curve, you know.

engineer, honestly, the cardboard idea wasn't even mine, I basically copied the same exact setup from another member here (credit given to that member)

-400 rds of 5.56 ammo on stripper clips in front
-box of 50rds of 9mm HP in between stacks
-14 mags in the middle (he had is mags loaded)
-2 boxes of 20rds of 9mm HP ammo & 6 BHP mags in the rear
-cardboard cut up surrounding and dividing everything

A96 honda, the spoon was taken out for the picture, I haven't figured out away yet to stop it from dropping into the whole in front of the 9mm ammo box

Guys, you don't how it warms my little pea picken heart to know there are folks like you guys that are ready for ANYTHING ! ! ! !   Those pics made my day.

BTW 20MM cans work well too. 25MM cans get a bit hefty but one must be practical when one is a member of NRA and presented with such.  Note:  NRA means NEVER REFUSE ANYTHING.  This is a step up from scrounger emeritus.

I have a detective  buddy  who when he leaves home on vacation carries 1500 rounds in mags with him as a "Getting home aid." should SHTF while he is away.  I know several other cops that are sitting on between 5K and 10K for the "fun of it".

I built a big-ass crate and painted it OD. I've got all my mags in there, meaning all my mags for every gun I've got. The bastard's gotten jammed full so I need to build another. Mags tend to breed when more than one are put together in a closed container.

Tossed in a carboard box or in the backpack I carried them out to the range in.  Loaded if I have the ammo.

I think of the "Anal Retentive Chef/Carpenter" when I see mags in nice ziploc bags and stored like you would a collectable.

Electrical and computer engineering, yes.  We don't cut things up unless they're fiber optic, silicon, or wire-related.  Cardboard's not even on my list of potential building materials.

is there something smaller than a 50cal can. i only need something to hold 10 mags. anyone know of anthing smaller to hold 10 mags? if not i will probably just cut some bigger cardboard, but would prefer a lighter can.

I find that the orange dry boxes from Wal-Mart work the best for storing my mags. I tried GI cans and just didn't work the way I wanted. In the wal-mart cans, I can put 28 thirty round mags loaded in each. And another plus is that the cans won't rust out over time.

How about a 30-cal can?  I just put 7 30-rd mags in one of mine on their sides in a single stack and had a small area in the front large enough to put in a couple of 20-rd boxes of ammo.

If you want to store more than 7 and less than 14, maybe there's a different-size ammo can for you.  Check out your local Army/Navy surplus store.

My go to mags are loaded and live in two surplus lbe's I have set up,with a bandoleer of ammo on stripper clips in the fanny pack.My range mags are either in the range bag or in a drawer under the reloading bench.

So, I have a bunch of mags loaded and in pouches or bandoleers. Also a bunch of ammo in stripper clips in bandoleers in ammo cans.

But I gotta' ask.

How many mags would you/should you have loaded?

I mean, if you have hundreds?

I kinda' went on a binge way back when.
8/29/2006 8:40:25 PM EDT
[#44]
How many can you carry if you have to bug out?  Or, how many do you foresee using up if zombies are swarming your house before you can get to a secure location w/more ammo to reload the mags you used?

ETA: that sounded crazy, but you know what I mean - how many can you see yourself using in the event you need them?

Quoted:

"Should" ?  "Should" ?

I see it as a balnce between how many you would normally carry, combined with how many you regularly use.

I keep 24 loaded in a SAW can because that is what I take to the range or a class.  Plus 12 loaded in a vest, plus 4 loaded in a drop leg.... which I use in 3gun, etc.

The rest, stay empty.  I dont have delusions of needing 100 loaded mags for defending my home.
