I apologize if this is posted in the wrong section, but I am having a terrible time removing the castle nut from my RRA rifle. I want to put in an adaptor plate for a single point sling.  I bought the stock wrench, mounted the lower on on a vise block and tried like HELL but it wouldnt budge. I even tried using a flat head screw driver with the tip taped up as to not mar the finish and tapping it with a hammer, with no luck.  So I look to my fellow AR-15'ers for advise......Any thoughts?

RRA probably decided to use blue lock-tight

heat up the tube, and it should come off with some more force

[yoda] Loc-tite them on they do. Heat! Heat is what you need. Strong the loc-tite is. Stronger still the heat! [/yoda]

Once again I apologize, I'm new to the AR world. You say heat, in what form? Like a blow torch heat or like a heat gun heat?

Let suppose I do remove the dasterdly castle nut.    When I put it back on, should I again use loc-tite?

Blue lock tight should not need heat. It is the red stuff that is supposed to need heat.

NO NO NO! They are not lok-tited! They are swaged! (Or crimped / pressed with a tool that looks like a big bolt cutter!!!!)

Really, I know!!!!!

The best way to get the castel nut is off is to take a dremill tool with a cut off wheel and slit the castle nut "across the threads" as far as you dare without dinging the threads on the stock.

Then grab the bugger tiube ina vise (padded to protect the tube, grab it by the part with the dented holes in it NOT the tube itself!!!)

Then take a sharp wood chisel and put it in the slot you just made and drive the chisle with a mallet in the direction it takes to unscrew it. It you hit it sharply, the nut will split at the cut and you will be able to spin it off by hand!

Simple and an new castle nut ($7.00) and you are back in bidness!

turn it to the left, not the right

If you are trying to take off the stock, to insure that you are turning the castle nut in the right direction place the lower receiver down with the stock on the right side. then when you go to loosen the nut twist "towards" you or "down". if the nut doesn't come loose it might be stacked or even have loctite on it.

Blue Loc-Tited.  Heat will make it tacky and easier to remove.  Generally a hair dryer will work, sometimes a heat gun is required.
If you can't get it off of there, let me know and we can take care of it here.

As Steve already pointed out, heat will release the loctites firm bond.  It shouldn't be hard.  I've used both a torch, as well as a hairdryer, and both have worked fine.

As far as reassembling it, I would stake it, or reuse the loctite that is on there.  I would not run any AR15 without the buffer tube/ receiver extension being on just wrench tight.  I tend to stake everything, but thats me.

I'm having the exact same problem with my RRA.  I even used a blowtorch and was unable to get it off.  Any other options?
