Team,

Been deployed to Iraq here for a bit and finally got a rythym to check on here.  Checking in on some questions I have on AR-15's

Back at home I have 2, a PWA w/20 in and a Bushmaster XM-15 done up like an M-4.

My questions are:

What is necessary to change out the upper reciever on an AR-15 from A2 to a flattop?  I bought a NSN model ACOG for use over here and like it.  I's like to slap it on my bushie when I get home but it is an A2.

I have seen that Bushmaster is making 24 in target uppers w/ either A2 or flattop uppers.  These barrels are 24 in w/ flashhiders...basically just a long barrel full size.  I remember seeing one when a kid and liked it.  What is necessary to put this on my PWA?  would the bolt and carrier mount right up or would I have to get a specific bolt and carrier for this upper?

Also, I've picked up an SP1 over here (not off someone in Iraq...off of the equipment exchange) recently and it should be waiting for me when I get back.  I've little experience w/ A1 models.  What is good to get?  The Sight tool?  How difficult is it to replace a birdcage with a prong flash hider?  Anyone know where I could possibly get a smoothside carrier?  This SP1 has the notches for a forward assist yet no assist.  If I can find a smoothside carrier, can I just put the other parts on it and be good to go?  I know that the 1/12 won't like heavy bullets, but how accurate is it with your avg. 55 grain stuff?

Thanks for the help.  For those who're curious, attached below are some pics of my M-4 and of me.  In the pic of me with the M-4, I had not yet "pimped" the gal out.  She was still wearing stock handguards, buttstock, grip, and Aimpoint.  I put on the Command X6 in green, matching command arms stock and grips (including forward grip), command arms rail mounted mag holder, and the ACOG.  A little heavier, but now with all the storage points (stock, both grips) I have been able to break down an most of a OTIS cleaning kit.

All you will need is some basic armory tools and a stripped flat-top upper.  Take all the parts from your existing AR and put them on the new receiver.  If you cant have the armory do it for you, or have them lend you the tools, you can get them fairly cheap from Brownells.

Thanks for your service and be safe.

The unit armorer won't be able to do it, he won't have the training or tools.  Major repairs like that are at least one, poosibly two levels higher than a typical company armorer.

Having said that, it's not all that hard from what the people who have built their own tell me.
Get the A4 (most civillian companies call them A3) upper that is stripped, and as stated just swap over the parts from your A2 upper, barrel, gas tube, rear sight.  Or if you don't want to buy the tools and do it yourself, look around for a gunsmith that can do it.
