I know I saw a thread like this a while back but I couldn't find anything with the search feature.  I'll be getting my first AR in the near future.  What kind of sovent/oil should I use?  What should I do the first time I take it out to shoot?  Is there some sort of "break in" period?

When you receive your rifle, read the owners manual that comes with it. Follow there instructions.
I believe any good gun lube will be fine. I am partial to BreakFree CLP for AR's.
Before you go shoot for the first time, look down the bore and make sure there are no obstructuions or oil in the bore. Good idea to check everytime.

Have fun!

You're going to get a lot of different responses on this.  When I get a new one, the first thing I do is fieldstrip and clean with Hoppes #9, hose everything off with Rem-Oil and let it dry some, and then lube with MilComm 2500 and/or TW25B.  Just make a couple of patch passes through the bore, no need to do any heavy scrubbing at all.

Take her to the range, run at least 30 rounds of full power XM193 or Q3131A through it and then switch over to whatever it will eat or keep running the XM193 through it if you have a pile of it.  I always like to start out with full power stuff before going over to Wolf or AE just as a brief check of function and to have enough power to compensate for the tightness of a brand new gun.  Fire a minimum of 200-250 rounds and consider it broken it.  Keep shooting or bring home and clean, depending on your budget and how much time you want to spend at the range.

This is just what I do and I'm sure everyone else has their own way.

One thing I'd say we all agree on though is ABOVE ALL ELSE, clean and lube it before your first trip to the range so it will be a happy experience!

Good luck!

Sounds good.  Thanks for the responses.  Does anyone have a link to a downloadable RRA owners manual?

Run a couple of dry patch through the barrel and shoot a couple of hundreds rounds and clean it. I don't think you can download RRA manual anywhere, but check their website.

Just a thought... it's not uncommon to see a small piece of metal inside the barrell at the top. This is a small burr often left behind when drilling out the port for the gas system. You can usually scrub it out with an initial cleaning and some guys just shoot it out. It's normal.

I would agree on shooting a good amount of full powered ammo first before you move onto Wolf or any of the cheaper stuff (if you plan to)
