With a 14.5" barrell, is the flash surpressor used to make the rest of the 16" barrell?

With the Flash Hider PERMENANT ATTACHED, the right sized flash hider CAN make a legal 16" bbl.

Not the standard A2 unless you shim the hell out of it, providing you have enough thread.
The KAC QD suppressor can be used, along with a host of Phantoms and similar.
Somebody offers a 14.7 that does use a standard A2 permanently attached to reach 16" but I can't remember who it is.

CMMG has the 14.7" that will work with an A2

lganimalvet you beat me too itmy wife says width but maybe its just to make me feel better

Lehnth doesnt matter unless shootong long range precision matches and such. For personel defense what was so 60 years ago is true today 90% of infantry contact takes place 100 yds and under and of tha 80% or more well under 50 yds...hell in iraq ive heard guys say 20 and 30 feet so it depends on what capacity you want to use the rifle in.

Damn should have read the thread better...yes a phantom permanently attched would be needed to make the 16" minimu or like some one else said CMMG makes a 14.7 permamnent A2 supressor...excellent barrels by the way.

Thread length is 5/8" on a typical AR type barrel.
You need to add about 1/8" or so to get most 14.5" barrels past 16" with an A2 comp.
Here is a little spacer I have made to solve the problem:

Spacing a standard A2 forward is not an issue, but it's not as nice looking as a Phantom or Vortex which have much more CDI factor.
I just could not miss the chance to bring it back around to the "is length important" question now could I?

Yes, if you have a 1.5" PERMANANTLY attached flash hider on a 14.5" barrell, it counts as a 16" barrell.

I like LMT to make 14.7 M4 barrels

I had kurt cut my already long long 16 barrel to 14.7 and added a bird cage brake
that was Back in 2001 before everyone like that idea

There's MORE too it than that

The muzzle has threads right?
Those threads are 5/8" long.
You would have to thread that 1.5" long muzzle device on to those threads before you could permanent attach it right?
As the muzzle device now overlaps the barrel, you LOSE that 5/8" effective length.
A2 comps are like 1.75" long
Then you add a crush washer for about 0.125".
This gets you to an effective addition of 1.25" to that 14.5" barrel.
You may be quick with math and note that you are at 15.75" long now.
You may NOT know that most 16" and shorter barrels are made about 1/8" longer than specified, so that 14.5" barrel is probably a 14.625" barrel.
Now you may note that you would only be 0.125" short of legal.
Then you may even ask about 14.7" barrels and think "gee, that would work" and you would be correct.
Something else, those 14.7" barrels are often more like 14.8" for safety margin.
Long before 14.7" barrels were common, I was shortening 16" barrels down to 14.8" to permanent attach an A2 comp.

One more thing, Phantoms and Vortexes are 2" long and WILL get you past 16" on a 14.5" barrel, but you probably knew that...
