Okay, I have looked at drawings and still can't find the difference between an A1 or A2 receiver, I always thought that the only difference in an A1 and an A2 was the handguards.

Yeah the main thing is the sights and that's all you really need to go buy.

A1 has windage adjustment only and the A2 actually has the rear sight assembly for elevation and windage.

Another question, I just got my first AR yesterday its a COLT  Sporter Match HBAR 6601 older model, it has an A2 upper with an A1 lower . The magazine release is exposed (a1 right?), is it uncommon for an AR manufacturer to use a combination of different lower and upper? Thanks

Yours is not a mixmatch....Colt eased into changes.  Your's is perfectly legit...some call them transition models.  My friend has a Colt Sporter II in identical configuration.

Colt has ALWAYS done this.  Any time the services went to an upgrade or change in profile, Colt used the leftover pieces of the older type to build civilian ARs.

I guess that makes for "collector" type civie ARs out there, but it's one reason I stopped looking at Colt products.

No an exposed magazine release was only on the very early models.   Every M16A1 I've been issued or handled had a magazine fence.

However Colt commerical rifles used the old style well into the 'A2' years.

In fact, the image shows a C7 upper with an A2 upper; the A1 lacked a brass deflector.  

I owned a rifle marked "AR15A2 Government Model"....with a 'slabside' lower and C7 upper. Hmm!

That Colt you have should also have standard fire control parts unlike the larger ones in the late model A2s with A2 lowers.

Okay I took some pics so you can see what I have, A2 Upper, A1 Lower,  pinned Sear Block not marked colt like I have seen others. Im gonna call colt to see what year this pre 94 rifle was made. BTW whats a good target ammo for this rifle?

Good looking gun!!!

Target ammo... black hills makes good 75 grain stuff and you can get the reloads for cheap... TAP and some others are good as well but more money.. If your asking what is the best off t he shelf stuff you can buy IMO it is federal gold match...

Have never seen a block like that... Is that an m-16 lower with the sear pin over sized and the block installed?

Thanks Mike, Im also a newbie so im really not sure about the sear block question, thanks for the ammo info, I think im gonna have to change my avatar because the AK is gonna be taking a backseat for awhile I can't wait to start shooting!
