For those of you who go to ranges that are "single load only", how do you load the single round? Years back, a soldier in the army at the SAFS at camp perry told me to put the round in on top of an empty magazine through the ejection port, and reach your hand through the carrying handle to press the bolt catch. I figured he probably has the best advice, but does this method scratch or damage the bullet in any way during feeding? I can't picture actually trying to shove it into the chamber like on an M1.

Just toss it into the port, bullet facing forward.  Push bolt release.
No need to push the round into the mag, or try to slide it into the chamber.
Your GTG.
