I'm getting ready to build a new AR and I need your help.  I already have an M4, so i'm looking for something to be more of a long range rifle.  Here's what I know I want:

PRI Gas Block
FF Rail System (Troy or DD)
Flat Top Upper Receiver
Vortex FH

What length/type of barrel would you guys recommend?  16", 18", 20"??  What gas system?

Can anyone also point me to ar15.com vendors who do custom uppers?

Thanks,
Mark

What do you define as 'Long Range'?  What is the purpose for shooting at this range (hitting paper or blasting small rodents? )

As for custom builders there are some good ones here for a precision upper go with a precision barrel, like the ones offered by Randall at www.AR15barrels.com.  Randall can build a custom barrel to your specifications.

Wes at MSTN.biz also has some match quality barrels on hand and builds nice uppers.

I will be using the rifle strictly for target shooting, so no varmint's involved.

What, exactly, is the distance you are planning on shooting at? A good match barrel of any of the lengths you supplied will be good out to a good distance. If your planning on 800-1000 yard shots the 20" is probably going to be ideal.

Longest range would be 700-800 yards.  Would there be an advantage to going with an 18" barrel, or should I go with a 16" with mid length gas system?

At that distance you could hypothetically use a 16" barrel but you should probably opt for the 18" or 20" as the bullets velocity will drop considerably after 500 yards out of a 16" barrel. There are plenty of good barrels out there though so check out the EE and take a look at some of the vendors and their stock.

Since you already have a M4, I would go with a 20" match barrel on your long range rifle.

For 700-800y I'd look to a 20" minimum, maybe consider a 24".  Rifle gas system for sure.
