What GhostRing told you is the most honest advice you are going to get.  You need to read, look at pictures, and gather more information.  The questions you need to ask are ones you don't even know about yet.

Read, get informed, and THEN make a decision.  Your money will be best spent that way, and you won't have to make changes or suffer from buyers remorse.

Go to the industry section on this site and look at various manufacture websites and look at the AR-15 picture thread to see what you like. Patriot Ordnance Factory, Bushmaster, CMMG, ACDO, TALON, Rock River Arms, Leitner Weis, Troy ind., ...Atlantic Firearms

First off no one can realy answer it because we dont know what you are looking for in a rifle or what you intend on doing with it, or anything other than sport target shooting which is a VAST area to cover. They are not shitting you when they say read as much as you can. Dont let someone else make the decision for you, come up with your own based on what you read... you will get a ton of different answers if people just told you what they thought was the best. We are realy trying to better help you, not trying to be ass holes about it.

Just what do you mean by "sport target shooting"?

If you mean you want something with a scope that you'll take to the range once in a while to put a few holes in some paper then the Bushmaster Varminter or Colt CAR-A3 HBAR Elite (CR6724) would work great for you.

If you're thinking more along the lines of formal target competition like NRA Service rifle then Bushmaster makes one that would be a great entry into the sport. I believe Armalite also makes a similar product, though Colt doesn't.

Or you could get a decent AR rifle or carbine for general plinking and paper punching from any number of companys. The old "ABC"* rule still holds true though you can add Rock River Arms in there too.

* - ABC = Armalite, Bushmaster and Colt. Pick a rifle from any of these three and it would be very hard to go wrong.

But on the same note, I have never bought a complete rifle and am glad too, I would have wasted money getting the configuration I was after, so thats why we say to read read read and read. Take about a month and just read every link, every post, every review and you will get an idea of what you want. That is what I did and I ended up getting totally opposite of what I came here looking for.

sport shooting= going to a range and punching holes in paper. possibly getting into some compitition shooting of some sorts.  i have been reading bushmaster website and they seem to make a good product.  i think i will look at purchasing the used one i have found. (2 stage trigger, 20" bbl, weighted buttstock)  and upgrade from there.  the bushmaster seems to be in good condition.  it is on consignment  and the on site armorer seemed to like the condition.  will purchase a heavy fluted bbl for it and possibly scope it. maybe a flash suppressor.  anything else you can reccommend that i may be interested in.

i am in Kansas City and am attempting to find a location that has organized shoots.

i appreciate the responses and look forward to any more feedback that may be given

thanks in advance,  Gotebo

If you are in Kansas City then you need to head over to Clay St and talk to Denny. But now you are saying competition, what kind? Most competition types are very picky on requirements for their rifles, thats why we say wait and read some before you jump.

rock river arms makes some of the most high quality and competitevly priced AR-15's on the market, period. If you dont believe me just ask half of the federal government, or the other half that's trying to piggy back on the first half's contracts. Im sure that rock river is getting their brains beat out right now with orders!
