What is the difference between cast and forged AR-15 receivers?
5/14/2006 3:21:54 PM EDT

The difference is the manner in which the metal is formed into the basic shape of the lower; casting is basically pouring the molten metal into a mold, and forging is just squishing metal into a set of dies.

Forging results in a stronger part than casting.

cast is crap, forged is good.
Letters on a cast receiver will usually be raised and forged are set in(not sure on terminology)

sure glad ya cleared that up for us.  except Ruger (investment cast) would disagree with you. and lots of guns sold to back that up. not a champion for Ruger, simply stating facts. cast can be better than forged, depending on the mfg'er.  I'd let the manufacturers reputation for good/bad equipment decide, rather than flatly declaring everything cast is "crap".

but that's just my opinion.....

the technique used is a big part of it, but pinetree certainly makes good stuff, the investment cast procedures they use are top of the line. one problem is that some alloys simply do not cast that well, but some aluminum that is doped right can make casting one of the best choices, the development of scandium doped alloy allows for grain structure that is unbelievable, it looks perfect on inspection.

but, the word to the wise is that there are currently no cast lowers that use the more expensive techniques

There are lots of cast firearms, and firearms parts out there. Ruger's are disegined from the ground up to be cast. AR-15's were designed to built out of forged parts. Substituting cast for forged, with the exact same dimensions may lead to durability or stress issues.

Granted forged is stronger on an AR, but to say cast is crap? No its good too, Ive got a cast that works fine, so does everybody else that I know.

if casting is as strong why aren't there more cast components?

Forged is the best

Stick with the forged recievers!

Check out the link below to find out why forging is superior.

Depends on the component, and what its used for. were talking about lower receivers not trigger groups.  Some lowers are completely milled, even better. But not necessary. A cast lower will work fine.

a good cast can be as good as a forged one.

remember, your car engine is basically made from a cast block.
