Can anyone suggest a decent inexpensive benchrest that will accomodate an AR15 w/ a thirty round clip?  I am planning on using it to sight the gun in but the vast majority of shooting I do will be unsupported.  Suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks.

What is the point if this delima?
I can see no reason of not using 20 or even a 5 round mag.
A 30 round mag is NOT  for bench shooting.
If all else fails, try a pillow and a cinder block.

What is a 30 round "clip"?

As suggested, use a 20 round MAGAZINE, and just use some sandbags....

I use a DPMS 10 roung mag for all my bench shooting.  I think I got it on sale for $15.  It works great, and it only sticks out past the mag well about 1/2".

As for the bench rest, the Caldwall "The Rock" will work ok.  Less than $100.

Beta mag & Harris BiPod

Shoot all day from the bench, and never need to mess with a magazine.

So I am getting that I should use a smaller, thus shorter magazine.  (Forgive my semantic /cant errors.)

I would prefer to get a rest rather than a bipod, since I really don't use anything other than the sling when I shoot.   I like to shoot w/o support and I am primarily going to use the bench to sight in the gun.  My other shooting will be standing, kneeling, seated and prone w/ a sling.   Any recommendations (other than the cinderblock - which is a good idea come to think of it) other than what has already been mentioned.  Thanks.

If you want something cheap i made some "sandbags"  out of the 5lb bags of flour and covered them in duct tape then laid in a black heavy fabric where there rifle will rest.  You get two heights with it ( third is too unstable) and it cost me maybe $5 if that to make.  I can send a picture if your curious.   Major

From a safety perspective, a smaller mag just makes sence as I always empty the rifle and remove the mag before I or anyone in my shooting party goes downrange to police targets. A five round group and 4 targets would do just fine in a 20 round mag. If you are shooting a Beta mag one wonders why you are shooting off a bench in the first place.

As always, YMMV,

I think the beta mag is a joke.... I hope.

Wow, lot's really helpful and friendly advice on this one.

Anyway, I use the Caldwell Steady Rest for most of my bench shooting. It will hold my AR or SU 16 with 30 round mags with no problem. With a standad stock it works fine as-is, with my Ace stock I have to add a sandbag under the butt. This model is the large, but light and inexpensive, plastic model. You can adjust barrel height and it has a large compartment directly under the action, it's meant for storing range supplies in but works great to let a 30 round mag fit in.

Actually, the truth is, the thirty round mags are the only kind I own - I have quite a few of them and frankly never thought to purchase smaller ones.  Based on the suggestions made - which make perfect sense, I will remedy that.

So, sorry to say, no - I am not joking.

This is the first AR that I have ever owned.   My initial training, and the vast majority of shooting that I have done competitively and recreationally has been bolt action single shot 22LR target.   I am still learning the ropes on this one and I am not going to pretend to knowledge or experience that I do not have.

I appreciate the suggestions from those who made them.
