had the same problem.
I've clamped mine in a vice and banged the upper from the back with a rubber hammer

Carbon build up is the problem.  Clamp the tube in a vice with some leather or other material to keep from marring the gas tube.  Grab the gas block with your hand and rotate it right to left until it loosens up.  Once you brake the carbon loose it should come off by working right to left whilst pulling on it.  A squirt of Liquid Wrench may also help.

After you get it out clean it up with a Scotch Brite pad.

vice grips will do the job.  You don't need to crush the tube, but clamp them on and a little twist and pull will get it out. (some CLP wouldn't hurt either).

Soak it in Kroil mixed with powder solvent ( 50/50 mix ) overnite and it'll come right out.  Soak the whole front band and the barrel nut/delta assembly also, makes removing the barrel a bit easier, too.....if you're doing that, that is.
