During active front line fighting, what type of optics are soldiers allowed to use? Are they provided or do the soldiers soldiers have to pay for them out of their own pockets. Also which do the soldiers trust the most when their lives are on the line? Just Wondering cause my father didnt have these options when he was in.

About which do soldiers mostly use: I usually see guys with Aimpoint M2's, EOTech's, or ACOG TA01NSN's.

Some units will purchase optics for their rifles.  Right now, ACOGs, EOtechs, and Aimpoints are popular.  My BN issued us Aimpoints in '97 when I was a platoon leader.  I think Aimpoints are stil the most common.  Soldiers can purchase their own IF their chain of aommand doesn't throw a fit.  I've been in units that will allow it and I've been in some that only want you to have what they issue you.

Depends on the unit.

Most guys in combat arms, like Infantry, Cavalry Scouts, pretty much anybody "special" will be issued optics. But not everyone gets them. Sometimes they that dont get them are allowed to purchase their own, sometimes not. I know a guy who was in Operation Iraqi Freedom. His NG engineering unit was attatched to 101st. HE didnt have a optic. His M16A2 hung from its standard two point sling completely devoid of any "tacticool" gear. The active duty guys from the 101st, however, were a different story, Im sure.

I however, know that I will at least have a Aimpoint M2 (M68 Close Combat Optic) because they are already standard at my unit.

I had a TA 31F issued to me but we also had Eotecs and aimpoints issued. Some guys bought their own stuff but I liked my ACOG.

It depends upon what you want to do with it.

From what I've seen in the corps it's either Irons or  that new RCO

OIF I- Aimpoint
OIF II- EOtech
OIF III-ACOG

Preferred the ACOG.  That being said I'll tell you why.  the accuracy and target ID obtained from the magnification are a big plus.  Could still shoot both eyes open CQB with no problem.  Held its zero best through lots of unintentional abuse.  The tritium and fiber optic provided a clear reticle at night even through PVS-14's.  I prefer this to IR laser.

Have seen some private purchase EOtechs but optics where I am are unit issued.

Eotechs and ACOG's (TAO1 and NSN model, TA31F) in my unit mounted on M4's.  There is one TA55 that is used.

ACOG's and Aimpoints.  I prefer my TA01NSN.  It's what I compete with too (or I pull the upper with the TA-11 on it).

We're almost all CompM2's. There are a few ACOG's of varying models (31F's or NSN's, depends what got bought in what batch on the unit credit cards), a couple private-purchase EoTechs, one private ACOG (mine), and a lot of support types with iron sights.
