I came across a Colt bolt carrier assembly in a friend's rifle today and I have never seen a M16 carrier like this one.  It appears to be an SP1 carrier modified to make it a M16 carrier.  I searched here and on the web and could not find any pics of one like it, but I did find a conversion "kit" at Bushmaster that appears similar.  Is this a legitimate carrier or modification or a hack job?

Here are some very large pics I took of the carrier.

Hu.?  I guess someone really wanted a M16 b/c and did not want to buy one.  Looks like it got a bit of use.  Never see such a thing.

Didn't Bushmaster use to sell a similar adapter?

Looks like someone's modification with a TIG welder.

That carrier may have been used with a RDIAS or registered lower. Probably not enough weight to affect unlock time so I don't see any other reason to add it.

If that was done at a factory their weldor needs more practice. (And learn not to  use copper coated filler rod on high strength steel.) I'd bet money it was GMAW. (mig)

Looks like Bubba the gunsmith is at it again.

This is an AR 15 carrier that has been converted to an M16 configuration.
I had my Colt SP1 converted to RR in 1984 by SWD in Atlanta,  Mine is also welded in. Probably couldn't keep it tight enough using alen screws, due to placement is critical for correct timming of autosear enguagement
This is how they did the carrier instead of installing an M16 factory carrier.
I still have it and it works great  , used it yesterday in a spare upper. I use an original Colt M16 carrier in primary upper.
