[Begin rant while chanting "This is my rifle, this is my gun.  This one's for fighting, this one's for fun"]

Brass marks add character!

Anyhow, I have seen some use black electrical tape on the brass deflecter.  WARNING:  I pick on anyone I see who applies black electrical tape to their brass deflecter.  The only way to avoid being the butt of any joke is if the shooter is blasting steel cased ammo because I will cut them some slack.

Another thing you can do to remove the marks is to use the Hoppes copper solvent and a toothbrush.  I know of someone who uses this method to clean the deflector when a used gun comes through his shop.

Remember, your gun is a tool, it is meant to be used, and brass marks are part of the game on the AR-15 platform.

Nice second post.  Are you certain that you are not a ?

[End rant while thinking:  This is my rifle.  There are many like it, but this one is MINE...]

ETA: End rant and a few parting words.

Having your rifle vaccuum sealed in a museum style display case will keep it looking new forever.

Why?its a weapon a tool to be used...beleive me the enemy dosent care about marks on your defelctor wether you kill him or he takes your weapon after he kills you...no one cares. If you want it to be a prissy rifle dont shoot it.

You need to break out asbestos undies with a question like that!

Even the "smartazz ones" were being very kind!  Using your first (or second) post to ask something like that is just asking for a roasting.  Most of the armchair commandos on here have to pick on someone to make themselves feel better...

As some have said, if it bothers you, it will clean off.  After a while, you will realize that little nicks and dings just add character...I don't beat the hell outta my guns, and if you want your guns to look like safe queens, that that is your thing and that is fine...just beware of the mall ninjas who will laugh...

I've heard if you leave it in the safe and never shoot it you won't get the brass deflector dinged up...

Either that or replace the upper with an older style A1 that doesn't have one.

I should post pics of some of my AR's...I got mixed colors (dura, blued), dings, etc....I'll never own a safe queen. If I can't buy it and beat it up, I dont want it.

Welcome to ARFCOM. Good stuff here.

ETA: Here one from the thread I had about 3000+ rounds and no cleaning...

Missing paint, chips, mixed colors....It's all good.

We had a pic here with someones AR there was barely any blueing left, he could signal aircraft with it if he wanted.

Ziti, that's one FUGLY AR!!!

I'm with most of you though. My first AR, a Colt, had me whining with every nick and scratch. My collection and scratches multiplied, so now I just shoot 'em and clean em.

Yeah, then you get brass marks on the actual upper
But hey, it adds character.

Now excuse me while I go key my brand new 2006 GT Mustang.
What? It adds character.

ETA: Okay okay I do agree that the case deflector IS supposed to be marked up, but yeah.

Try geting a small pice of anti slip textured self adhisive tape. They sell difent sizes at home depoit. Cut and applly. As it gets messed up. Remove clean brass deflector with alcohal and put some more on. Seams to work and I have seen several done like that on the pic Thread.

You have no idea how many uppers I have receivedover the last few years that have something protecting the brass deflector.
I'm telling you, 95% of AR owners ARs look brand new, will never be shot more than 500 rounds, and will only be shot while sitting at a bench, at a paper plate no more than 50yds away.

Maybe you can start a brass deflector refinishing service.

"Your brass deflector will shine like new for $50!"

I put a piece of fuzzy velcro tape on the brass deflector for my precision upper, but not to protect the brass deflector.  It was to keep the nice match brass from getting dented.
