I just picked up my DPMS yesterday took it out and it shoots great. I paid $600 for it. Did I come out ok on the deal. I plan on leaving it as is for a while but in the furture Im wanting to remove the A1 upper and get a flat top. I would like to sell/trade the A1 to offset the price of the flat top. Do you guys agree on this idea? What would the going price/trade value of a A1 upper be. What is the going price of a decent new/used flat top. Anything I should look for when searching for a new upper? I would also like to hear any sugestions that you guys may have for a noob. Maybe you guys can tell me a little more about what I have as well.

You could buy a new flat top upper for $ 100 and remove that barrel from the A-1 upper and reinstall it in the flat top. You would need a few tools to do that. For a one time job it might be easier to pay ADCO or AR15barrells.com to switch the barrel for you.

What would that cost? My old roomate has the tools but he lives about 45 minutes from here. Do you guys agree with switching the upper or would I be making a mistake?

If you are new ARs and rifles in general, I would leave that upper as is for now and practice, practice practice. By the time you get to the point that you want a different upper ie to use a red dot or whatever, you will have made up your mind what you want.

For now it is just fine. There is nothing wrong with that set up.

I started with an A2 upper, and didn't switch to a flattop when I went to an EoTech.

I'm interested in that upper when you do take it off

Dude...do NOT underappreciate the A1.....there's more than a few of us Old School folks who won't have anything BUT an A1.  Leave it as is....make your NEXT AR a flat top.

There's ALWAYS a next one.

I've seen $600, and oh so much more, look a lot worse...  I'd say you done good & agree w/ what Aimless said.  Practice, practice, practice.

You might find out- there's nothing more you want, or you'll find what you don't like and can narrow down choices afterward.  It's much better to go into accessorizing and changing configurations w/ a cool head rather than let emotions overrun your intellect.  If I'd have made better, more precise, decisions on what exactly it was that I wanted- I'd probably still have as much AR stuff and money in AR stuff... But I'd have had what I wanted a lot sooner and ultimately would have had more time to enjoy my ARs.

HTH-

Sly

Very nice rifle. You did good. I have flat tips and A2's and A1's . The A1's are my favorite. Keep her as is and shoot her awhile. I personally believe the A1 is a better site for the Standard  AR because of the simplisty. Congrads.... WarDawg

I'd keep the A1 upper as is unless you absolutely have to have the flat top.  A1's are simple and effective and also kinda cool.

IIRC, new flat tops can be had for around $110 and NEW A1's are around $150 or more.

If you decide to sell or trade the A1, it should bring equal or more (depending on condition) than a new flat top upper reciever.

Thanks for the help guys. Like I said Im probably gonna leave it for a while but Im still curious what sort of price range Im looking at. Could I trade the A1 for a flat top in the furture and break even? I like the way it is now but would like to see what my options are. I have red dots for my Ak's and really like them on the Ak's and am thinking I would like to add one to the DPMS in the furture.
