OK, I feel a case of BRD coming on. I've fought it for some time, but it is inevitable. I'm seriously thinking of going bushmaster. They seem to be quality and not hideously expensive. I've been lurking for a bit over here (usually hang out in the handgun area). So please excuse the noob questions. Oh, and I'm not ready to build one of my own. If I build, it will be an AK for play only.

I guess I should state why I want one.
1. range fun
2. shtf
3. cause they're cool

1. I've read some good stuff on getting 5.56 over .223, but I just compared the balistics and you can get 3000+ fps from .223 so maybe it's not such a big deal. Thoughts?

2. I'm interested in one of the 16 inch barrels w/ the permanently attached flash suppressors. One is 14.5 inches w/ a 1.5 inch FS while another is 11.5 w/ 5.5 FS. Why on earth would anyone want the 11.5/5.5 option?

3. Any other brand suggestions that I should consider?

Thank you and I apologize if this sort of thread is already out there.

I don't think you can go wrong with anything Bushmaster has to offer that meets your needs. I would go with the 16" barrel over the 14.5" or the 11.5", but that's me.

All Bushmaster rifles are chambered in 5.56 so you can shoot either 5.56 or .223.

People go with the 11.5" so they can get the look they want or so they can SBR the thing easier.

I prefer Bushmaster myself for a complete rifle, but there are several other builders that make a fine rifle.

#1..............I cant comment.
#2 Some people will tell you to get 16" but I like the 14.5" my self. Just make sure you get what you want and not what every one else wants. Why to get a 11.5"+5.5" FH. Greater flash suspension, yes?
#3 I would say BM is tops in my book flowed by a very close RRA.

You can feed both 5.56 and .223 ammo through a Bushmaster.
If you get either the 14.5 or the 11.5" models, you are stuck with what Bushmaster gives you on the end of the barrel unless you want to go through the hassle of cutting/grinding it off and changing it to another permanant extended length FS. The 11.5 comes with a birdcage style which doesn't perform as well as the Phanton, etc. as a flash supressor and judging by the tests done, the 11.5" barrels produce alot of flash. The same goes for the 14.5 and additional flash over the 16" barrels, but you get either an Izzy which doesn't perform well either or a Y-comp which isn't intended to be a supressor at all.
If you just stick with a 16" barrel, you can change supressors/compensators at will and you get the potential benefits from having more barrel length after the gas block.

+1 to all of the above

Plus BM has great customer service. BTW I reccommend the 16" over the 14.5

+1 for bushy or RRA. get the 16 without perm attached flash hider. perm attached = PITA

bushmaster just raised their prices recently so if price is a factor I would go with RRA. I have a Ar-15 with bushy upper and RRA lower it is a very good fit no movement between the upper and lower, and it fuctions very well.

As far as .223 vs 5.56, any quality 5.56 beats any quality .223 of the same bullet weight for anti-personnel reasons. There are many quality .223 rounds for target use. .223 75gr and 77gr ammo is a very capable defense round and target round. The 11.5" barrel w/ perm FS is for people who want something similar to the XM177E2. If you get a 14.5 w/ perm FS, you won't be able to add some FF rails. I believe Bushy is available with a Phantom 5C2 FS which is one of the best. If you plan on changing FS and/or one piece FF rail at lot, don't get a 14.5" barrel...

for a stock AR, i would look at Bushmaster or RRA first off (RRA usually has cheaper prices)

whichever you get i would opt for:
--5.56 chambering (.223 wylde for RRA)
--A3 (flatop upper)
--Chrome-Lining (std on bushys)

either a 16in w/ FH carbine bushy or (most prefered) RRA midlenght 16in w/ FH

the longer 5.5FH does not provide any if that much more flash suppression over a 1.5in vortex or Phantom--its simply attached to the 11.5in bbl to make it 16in legal
its waste imo--get the longer bbl--either 14.5+perm FH or a 16in w/ removable FH
