Took the AR to the range today (3 hours) for some more break-in and to site it in. (Just got my front site tool.) I have a FF 16" barrel with A2 front site and Troy rear BUIS. Was shooting Q3131 (new stuff) at 50 yds. After playing with the elevation / windage adjustments I can keep everything in the 8 ring with very few flyers, but they are all over the place. This is frusterating because my Sub2000 9mm will destroy a new foam target board every time because everything will stay inside the 9 ring and leaves a much larger hole. The Sub2000 also seems to have more recoil, and I have never even adjusted the cheapo factory sites. BTW, I was using the large aperture and using my elbow as a rest. The large one seems HUGE though, but the small on the Troy is same plane, however shifted to the right. Should I bring it in to 25 yds? where should the POI be at that range in relation to 50 yds? I plan to toss an EOTech on there but would first like to master the irons. Just wanted to see what some of you thought and how I stand up to the rest. |

I find the Improved Battlesight Zero to be the best method for me. Give it a try and I think you will too. BTW: There are other methods of Zero'ing your AR15 on the Maryland AR Shooters Site if the IBZ isn't your choice. |
Larger aperture will produce larger groups - but its better in low light and for 'snap shots'.
Hell No!
Point of aim should equal point of impact at 50y for an optimal zero. |

| I did zero at 50 yds, but I have a Troy rear BUIS and the large aperature is HUGE. I can't imagine using it at 100 yds. I would use the small for sighting in, but it is offset to the right. (Troy should have offset the damned hole to compensate for this.) The best I could do was to keep the majority of them in the 8 ring. Guess I need more trigger time and a sandbag or something. |

I have to echo what Stickman said. The 8 ring of WHAT TARGET? An FBI-type silouhette? An NRA 50 foot pistol target? It makes a difference-a BIG difference. I just spent time on the range trying to figure out whether my sights or my aim were what was causing me to be off-low and to the right. This was with a target with a 3-inch black bullseye; I was at the edge of the bottom right quadrant of the bull. What size is the 8 ring on your target? That will tell you how good your aim is. Mine...mine needs work. Darn. More range time! |
