I have 4,000 rounds for my AK. An now I have a AR15. How much ammo should I keep on hand for the both of them. I go to the range when ever I can get a chance to go. I am a Nam Vet that does like to shoot. Thanks for any help. hug.gif

Never enough Ammo!!! Even tho I don't have near enough. I have around 400 rounds for my AR. 50 rounds for my .38, and around 100 for my G23.

Thats like asking how much is a cache?

Too much is never enough....

I'd say as much as you can store.  Ammo cans are cheap!

Get more.
You can never have enough, living in occupied territories.

Some is a good start.
More is better.
Too much is just right.

How much do you expect you'll need?

I think around 1,000 rounds of specialty ammo (MK262, Hornady TAP, etc.) and 5,000 rounds of bulk/SHTF ammo such as M855/XM193, etc. is about right.

I buy my ammo on this theory,

If I buy 1,000 rounds, 500 gets stashed and 500 gets used for practice.

If you do this over a period of time you will build up a nice  ammo stash

You can never have enough... Realistically, when you don't eat so you can buy ammo is enough.

As long as you have room to store it and strength to move it around so you can select what to take to the range, it's all good.

On the other hand, I would try to stay away from having more on hand than you can project shooting over a reasonable amount of time, otherwise you could be in a position where you HAVE to mess with what you have just to get around in a room...It's too much when it's really in the way, even when it's "put away."

I only have 700rds of .223 on hand, once I break into that last 500rds, I try to order another case.

I think you need as much .223 as 7.62x39

I try to have at least a minimum of 1K of ammo for each caliber I have which are 5.56 NATO, 7.62X39mm and 7.62 NATO.

I wish I have more.

That sounds like a decent guideline to me.  There's no such thing as too much, but those numbers are when you're at the level where you can say "I can get by on this", and you've probably got better things to spend the cash on from that point (like more spare parts, non-firearm SHTF gear to add to the collection, or save up for NFA stuff, or whatever).

Depends on how big your house is.

If you can still get out of bed and take a pee at night without tripping over an ammo can, you ain't got enough.

That being said, I want to make it clear all I have is one box of .22lr, if anyone from the goon squad is asking .

At least 1000 rounds for each rifle+your load of mags loaded up in my case with my AR 22 mags.%00 rounds for each pistol and 250 for the shotgun is what I do.That being said you can never have enough ammo.

Me too. I try to maintain at least 1000 rounds for every caliber I own ( except .357 mag which I don't shoot very often).

I don't think you could ever had too much ammo.

Inventory vs. cash on hand.

If you shoot, you can never have enough ammo. That being said, let your supply hover within a range; if you find a deal on quality ammo, buy a bunch, otherwise run it down.

For instance, in 5.56 I run two M16s, an AC556 and a few ARs. I like to have anywhere from 5k - 30k rounds on hand. Usually no less than 10k, as running trhu 1k rounds in a day of F/A is a snap. Adjust accordingly.

When the IMI M855 was common, I bought a truckload (literally).

LOL, you got that right.  But then again, and depending on where you live, anyone with over two boxes of ammo is  portrayed by the liberal press as deranged and a  danger to society.

How much is enough ammo ?

The mere fact that you asked this question means you don't have enough.

Well it depends on what you have for floor joists..... If they're only 2 by 12s you can sister them up to get more loading capacity for each room of storage.  But be sure to add a few more posts to support the floor as needed.

This is the proper answer to the question. You'll know when you have enough. Until then, keep buying.
