Reading Jacks post about the M4 profile and admiring my 6520 got me to thinking... Has anyone out there actually had problems from their A1 barrels, aither 16" or 20"? Overheating, horrible accuracy after any amount of shoots, bending, anything else you've ever heard.

If you have had problems, please provide all info you can.

Problems or not, pics are a good thing

Nope, and I don't "spare the rod" when using it, either.

Only with a Mini14, but that's Off topic.

I have a 16" LW from JT. It works great.

I was a little skeptical too about overheating. I found this not to be the case.

Maybe on a FF, stainless barreled, scoped rifle you could tell but, not on a iron sighted combat gun.

I've heard of A1 barrels bending when subjected to extreme forces, like trying to pry a stuck door/lid with a barrel. Who the hell would do that to a rifle? But it's been done and the barrels have been bent. The barrel would NEVER bend under normal use.

Overheating? No. Poor accuracu? No. Not unless you count firing a heavy round out of a 1:12 barrel (typical twist of an A1), and having your shot veer off in a random direction because the bullet wasn't spin-stabilized. Again, use the rifle as it was intended to be used and you won't have any problems.

Edit: busting myths, eh? Do Jamie and Adam know about you?

As a civilian, you are unlikely to notice stringing or loss of accuracy caused by excessive barrel heat with a light weight-A1 profile barrel. We had some accuracy loss after multiple mag dumps out of an A1 and 653 but this was a considerable amount of abuse that an average shooter will not or is not capable of subjecting his weapon to. Even though there was accuracy loss and stringing, it was still capable of "defensive accuracy". We had a Colt LMG which exibited the same phenomenon after clearing multiple Cmags. It just takes longer to heat up an A2 or HBAR to the point of accuracy degredation. It also takes a considerable amount of force to warp a barrel.

Some less informed act as though one 20 round magazine fired rapidly will cause a total loss of accuracy and bend your barrel. This isn't the case at all. The military had a problem with barrel warpage primiarly from bayonet drills, which is part of the reason of the A2 being heavy forward of the FSB to help minimize this problem.  IMO, the problems with the A1 profile barrel have been largely exagerated and false-isms have been perpetuated by those who have had no experience.
I think the the A1 profile is the best choice for a carbine and most rifles, especially those used by civilians in semi-auto only.
