[ARCHIVED THREAD] - New guy AR question

My son has a brand new, unfired Bushy in .308, and I have a new DPMS LR-308. It's been 37 years since I carried an M-16 (only briefly before I went back to the M-14). Can these weapons be dry fired without damaging anything? My 14 had no problem with it, but I don't know about an AR.

I've always used snap caps for mine, but the general consensus here is that you can dry fire the sh*t out of them just fine.

(Now watch, someone will contradict that.)

no dry firing it's bad.
J/K dryfire away. I also use snap caps. Force of habit I guess

I believe the only thing you don't want to do, is let the hammer drop when the upper is removed.
