I have a Colt Match Target .223 rifle (politically correct term for AR-15 after AWB).  How do I know if the barrel is chrome lined?  Also, what is the difference between Mil Spec .223 vs. SAAMI?

Where would I llok to see if the barrel is marked?  On the inside where the bolt locking lugs go?

Along the top of the barrel, it says " C MP 5.56 Nato 1/7"

Colt barrel, 5.56 chamber so you are fine with either 5.56 or .223 ammo.

If it has a chrome bore it will be marked like this by the chamber:

I posted this question in my thread about the Oly target rifle....

According to Oly....chrome lined barrels will last longer, but the lining affects accuracy.
According to them, non-chrome is more accurate...and comments on this?

It is probably chrome chambered but not chrome bore.

"C" denotes Colt, "MP" means (magnetic partifluxed) which is a method of testing parts for incipient cracks and surface irregularities.

Ex., A bushmaster barrel with the same lining and twist would be marked "B MP 1/7"

I took the hangdyards off (major pain in the ass, by the way).  There are no markings anywhere near the bottom of the barrel.  Only marking I saw was obviously a date code near the very top of the barrel (6/99)

A Colt's barrel from 1999 that lacks the "O" marking should not have a chrome bore.

Maybe using older or 'rougher' chroming techniques, but I doubt that anyone short of a benchrest shooter would be able to tell the accuracy difference in a chrome or non-chromed barrel.

Heck, the FN SPR bolt-action rifle has a chrome lined barrel, and it'll do sub-moa, as long as I am not the one shooting...

IMO, there is no good reason not to get a chromed rifle these days.

Troy pretty much laid the smack down on this old wives tale. I guess it's true for older chrome lined barrels, (like an sks or and ak47 or something) but not true for barrels using  todays chrome lining techniques. And there you have it.
